Participants Explore Themes and Techniques in New "Exploring Disney Animation" Program at the Y's Emilson Branch
In mid-October, the Y's Emilson Branch launched a brand new program in partnership with Autism Resource Center, titled "Exploring Disney Animation," for adults ages 18+ with Autism Spectrum Disorder. During a class this past November, participants had a blast exploring the themes and techniques behind the Pixar movie, Finding Nemo.
Athletes Explore New Sports and Gain Instruction at Introduction to Paralympic Sports Clinic
The positive and welcoming energy inside the Quincy Y’s gymnasium was unmistakable on Sunday, November 13th, as athletes from across the South Shore gathered for the much anticipated Introduction to Paralympic Sports Clinic. Over the course of the afternoon, athletes had the opportunity to participate in over ten different sports, including wheelchair basketball, running and rowing to name a few, connect with representatives from other sport organizations to gain resources, and meet members of the Rio 2016 Team!
"We at the South Shore YMCA are honored to have hosted this event and to have witnessed the excitement and energy of the athletes there having an opportunity to explore a variety of sports,” stated Lisa Drennan, Association Director of Inclusion at the South Shore YMCA.  “Adaptive Sports New England and all of the partner organizations involved provided information and opportunities for hands on trials in a supportive and engaging manner, very welcoming for the guests and their families. We look forward to future collaborations with them!"
SSYMCA Afterschool and Day Camp Teams Participate in Inclusion Training
In November, South Shore YMCA Afterschool and Day Camp Staff convened for an inclusion training to continue the conversation about current practices, successes and challenges. Aron Hall, Director of Programs at National Inclusion Project, was on hand to provide support, guidance and expertise to help the Y continue to improve its inclusion initiative.
“We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to have Aron join our team to explore ways in which we can improve our commitment to inclusion,” stated Lisa Drennan, Association Director of Inclusion at the South Shore YMCA. “Having the chance to tap into his expertise was a valuable resource for our team.”
