Strength and confidence with the Y community
The South Shore YMCA exists to strengthen the community, improving the lives of those we serve in spirit, mind and body. We are pleased to share this week's Mission Moment, a story of impact brought to you by Stephanie Costa, Health and Wellness Director at the Emilson YMCA.

This Week's Mission Moment

“The Y gives me a place where I feel stronger, more confident, and healthier. It’s a place where I belong.”
Peter joined our South Shore YMCA Emilson branch two years ago. He had recently lost his wife and the isolation from the pandemic deepened his loneliness. After completing pulmonary rehab for respiratory issues, Peter participated in our Pulmonary Transition Program, one of our specialized Medical Wellness programs. He enjoyed that program so much that he continued to come to the Y, becoming a regular in our fitness center.
Before joining the Y Peter would walk around his neighborhood when the air quality allowed, but his exercise was limited. The Emilson Y fitness center has since become a place where he feels he belongs and can push forward with his fitness goals, something he never thought would be possible.
Peter's warm presence and positive energy is consistent. He regularly attends our blood pressure clinics at the Emilson YMCA, where Nurse Mary ensures he stays on top of his health. Peter's caring nature shines through as he always takes the time to ask others how they are doing, making friends with fellow members and staff.
When Peter joined our Y community, he found wellness programs and social connections that have made a major impact. "Being a part of the Y community has transformed my life,” says Peter. “The support I've received has been incredible, and has helped me improve both my physical and mental health. I’m so thankful for everyone I’ve met here.”
The South Shore YMCA has not only helped Peter improve his quality of life but has also provided him with the confidence to enjoy life and cherish his family. We are honored to be part of Peter's journey and inspired by his dedication and kind heart.
