Convening around Prevention

the foundations of consent and bodily autonomy with our adult partners

It was incredible to gather with nearly 100 individuals from over a dozen day programs and partners for our second Art of Prevention Convening on March 25 at the Ukranian American Community Center in Minneapolis.
Together, we continued to practice the foundations of consent and bodily autonomy by dancing our way through "yes," "no," and "I can change my mind." We deepened the conversations that we began at our first Art of Prevention Convening last December, emphasizing our interconnected relationships.

We discussed how we could practice consent on a daily basis and explored what we wanted to learn from each other to keep this work moving forward. These rich conversations turned into collaborative poems, proclaiming "Listen to my boundaries" and "I need space to breathe and be me."
Huge thanks to the Minnesota Department of Health Capacity Strengthening Initiative, which supported this work, as well as MNCASA and the Minnesota Department of Human Services, who support our sexual violence prevention work.

Critical Funding for Critical Work

The need for prevention work has not changed - individuals with disabilities still experience sexual violence at an alarming rate. But we are seeing devastating cuts at the federal level, including the recent sweeping staff cuts to the Division of Violence Prevention in the CDC, which in turn will impact our funding and ability to carry out significant upcoming prevention work.
In this ongoing epidemic of sexual violence, we cannot stress enough how necessary and powerful our work is. We see it in every classroom, like in a high school Art of Relationships program where the teacher shared:
"Ruby is very quiet and doesn't self-advocate a lot at all, but she came up to me and told me that a student was too close to her, and she told the other student not to do that again. I would attribute that to Upstream Arts."
These moments of practice build lifelong skills. It will take $55,998 to close the gap by June 30, 2025 and fully fund our powerful programs. Contribute $100 today, or any amount meaningful to you, to join the confluence cultivating self expression, self-advocacy, bodily autonomy, and the joy of a creative, connected world.
