Exodus 34:29
When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord.
New International Version (NIV)
If you get really close to God, somebody will notice, but you yourself might be unaware.  One of the dangers of trying to grow in relationship with God is our own pride.  Before long we want somebody to know how much we have read in the scripture or how much time we spend in prayer.  This self-centeredness is likely not a sign of true growth in discipleship.

Moses had a difficult job.  The first time he received the ten commandments (which start with no other gods and no idols), the people of Israel were down the mountainside making and worshiping a golden calf.  Their spiritual impatience got the best of them.  Afterward, Moses set up a tent of meeting where God met with him and people brought their concerns.  It functioned as a holy customer service office.  When Moses went to the tent, the people stood reverently at the doors of their own tents because they knew he was going to meet with God.

Finally Moses went back up the mountain to receive a second set of stone tablets with the ten commandments, because he had broken the original set.  When he came down the mountain, his face was radiant from having been with God.  But Moses, himself didn’t know.  He wore a veil so that he could cover the glow.   It faded over time, as our enthusiasm for the Lord sometimes does.  Paul took it a step further in his second letter to the Corinthians.  He said, “We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”  As we get closer to God, we will glow, and it won’t fade.  Psalm 34:5 says, “The Psalmist says that all who look to the Lord are radiant.”  Lean your elbows on the windowsill of heaven and see Jesus, then spend the rest of your life shining!

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for transforming us to be like Jesus.  Deliver us from a rule-keeping religion and move us deeper into relationship with you and others.    We pray that our countenances will reveal your glory to others as we grow to become more like Jesus.  In his name we pray.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download

Joyfully,
