JOURNEY TO NYU #8: Understanding US Healthcare
This message is the eighth of an email series for new international students (catch up on previous emails if you missed any). They contain very important immigration information and resources to help you acclimate to NYU and to the US.
Here we’ve compiled some basic guidelines to help you understand healthcare in the US.
Know Before You Go
Healthcare in the US can be confusing. But we are here to help! Review our information on understanding healthcare in the US to learn the most common types of services and terms found in a typical insurance plan. Also be sure to sit in on the Wellness at NYU 101 webinar for further tips and information.
Student Health Center At Your Service
At NYU your health and wellbeing come first. Whether it's appointments at the Student Health Center in Brooklyn and Manhattan, or calls to the 24/7 Wellness Exchange hotline, NYU is committed to providing you access to affordable, quality medical and mental health care anytime you need it. During your time at NYU, you should consider the Student Health Center to be your one-stop shop for all your health concerns.
What Do I Need To Know About Health Insurance?
Every international student studying at NYU is required to have health insurance, so you will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the NYU sponsored Comprehensive Insurance Plan each semester. If you’d prefer to, you can enroll in the Basic Plan, which has the same coverage but has higher out-of-pocket expenses if and when you need healthcare. We have an upcoming session for international students on understanding student health insurance. Also, the Student Health Center offers Insurance 101 webinars to help you further understand the basics of health insurance.
If you have your own insurance plan, you may be able to waive the NYU sponsored plan if you meet certain coverage requirements. The deadline to waive or change your plan is September 30.
Do I have the required immunizations?
All NYU students were required to meet health requirements and prove they have received certain vaccinations. Failure to comply with these requirements within 45 days after the start of the semester will lead to de-enrollment from classes and prohibition from entering all NYU facilities.
Upcoming Information Sessions
We record many of our sessions, so if you are unable to attend any of the sessions listed below or those you noticed were offered earlier, be sure to check our recorded workshops information page to catch up on anything you may have missed!
International Student Orientation
In addition to all the great pre-orientation sessions happening this summer, plan to join us for a mandatory orientation where you’ll learn your legal requirements in the US. Even if you’re returning from a leave of absence, you’ll find the information a good refresher. But it’s only mandatory for students who are attending their first semester at NYU in New York. Remember, your US education is dependent on your immigration status. You’ll also receive helpful resources for NYC living, work options in the US, and more. For more information about how to register, and a full listing of our orientation sessions, head over to our international student orientation page.
