New Infographic Strengthens the Conversation on K-12 Student Privacy

Resource Released Via Collaborative Effort Between CoSN and NSPRA

Washington, DC (August 28, 2014) – With the school year commencing across the country, CoSN (Consortium for School Networking) and the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) today released a new resource empowering school leaders to discuss a critical issue: student privacy.

The infographic provides an explanation to parents and guardians of students about school privacy practices and why they are needed. This is the newest tool from CoSN’s Protecting Privacy in Connected Learning initiative.
“Collecting student information and data is a bit unsettling for parents and guardians. But these rising concerns make it essential that school leaders clearly articulate their student information and data practices. And, as importantly, tell them why these practices make a positive difference,” said Keith Krueger, CEO of CoSN. “This resource will help superintendents, administrators and teachers demonstrate their commitment to delivering a safe, transformational educational experience for students.”

Available in English and English/Spanish, the infographic answers the following key questions:
  • What data are collected and why?
  • How do education data support student success and school improvement?
  • How are education data protected?
The resource is customizable for the school or district, allowing school leaders to include specific information about a local situation. Additionally, the infographic points audiences to other sources of information about the legal rights of parents and guardians.

“Privacy of student data is one of those issues that begs for straightforward and clear explanation. Too often, misinformation creates concerns that are easily eased when parents fully understand how their child’s data are protected,” said Rich Bagin, APR, Executive Director, NSPRA. “We are pleased to join with CoSN in helping schools become more transparent through this infographic.”

The privacy infographic is part of CoSN’s Protecting Privacy in Connected Learning Leadership initiative with support from Lightspeed Systems and Microsoft. CoSN appreciates the review of the new infographic by the National PTA, as well as Common Sense Media and the Data Quality Campaign. CoSN accepts sole responsibility for all information provided in the infographic.

Earlier this year, CoSN launched an in-depth, step-by-step privacy toolkit and two complementary resources to support school system leaders in navigating the complex federal laws and related issues. The toolkit addresses compliance with laws such as the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and offers smart practices to better protect student privacy and their data.
