A Note from Peter Henke
We are well on our way in making 2022 an excellent year. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Loay Kabbani has joined the BMC2 Coordinating Center as a strategic advisor for Vascular Surgery. Dr. Kabbani joins PCI strategic advisor, Dr. Ryan Madder, and will meet with BMC2 leadership tri-annually to discuss BMC2 priorities. These priorities include strategic direction of the organization, peer review goals and topics, new reporting opportunities, annual incentive goals, and more.
Dr. Kabbani’s research interests include clinical outcomes in vascular care quality, comparative effectiveness of vascular therapies, health care policy, and social disparities in health care. He completed a Master of Science in Health Administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 2019. Dr. Kabbani is board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery and surgical critical care. He is a graduate of the University of Damascus, Syria and did his General Surgery Residency at Henry Ford Hospital and his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at University of Michigan.
An Associate Professor of Surgery at Wayne State University, he is the Program Director for the Vascular Surgery Fellowship and Vice Chair of Surgery, Research at Henry Ford Hospital. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Kabbani!

Introducing the Michigan Structural Heart Consortium
The Michigan TAVR consortium, convened in 2015, has long focused on supporting quality improvement of transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedures across the State of Michigan. With the growing use of transcatheter mitral valve therapies, Michigan TAVR’s scope is also expanding to include this important new area of quality improvement focus.
We are proud to introduce the Michigan Structural Heart Consortium, that beginning in 2022, will report both TAVR and mitral procedure data to all Michigan hospitals, and convene stakeholders around data-driven QI initiatives, education, and networking.
As part of our launch of MISHC, we invite you to explore our new website, mishc.org, where you’ll find best practice protocols, a risk calculator, valuable site coordinator resources, links to guidelines, and news and information about the consortium.
Keep an eye on the mishc.org blog for site success stories, staff spotlights, information on publications and presentations, as well as consortium-wide meeting summaries.
MISHC is a collaboration between the Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons Quality Collaborative (MSTCVS) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Cardiovascular Consortium (BMC2).

Publication
"Impact of a Regional Smoking Cessation Intervention for Vascular Surgery Patients" was recently published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery. This paper, by Drs. Ryan Howard, Jeremy Albright, Nicholas Osborne, Michael Englesbe, Philip Goodney, and Peter Henke, concludes that in a cohort of vascular surgical patients where tobacco use was common, nearly one-half of patients quit smoking one year after surgery. Receiving two smoking cessation intervention components was associated with quitting at 30 days. Overall, these results demonstrate encouraging quit rates and identify an opportunity for longer-term intervention to maintain even greater one-year tobacco cessation.

NEW: Emergency Protocols Work Group
BMC2 PCI plans to create protocols for emergencies that happen infrequently, but that cath lab teams should be up-to-date and ready to react to. We need your help to create these protocols. Participation will involve attending a few small group meetings and doing some offline document review. Please contact Pam Benci, plf@med.umich.edu, if you are interested in participating. Thank you in advance for your support of this important initiative.

NEW: STEMI Admission Protocols
Does your site have a protocol describing best practices for admitting STEMI patients to a step-down floor, rather than the ICU? If so, we’d like to hear about it. Please share it with BMC2.

Patient Engagement at BMC2
We are seeking additional patients that represent the diversity of our State to join the newly convened Patient Advisory Council. Can you recommend a patient to this group? There is no up-front commitment and patients will be compensated for their time. Learn more.
