Concord's Independent Bookstore Since 1898

Reopening ... but just a little

Beginning May 26, we plan to open the store for shopping by appointment only. Single groups can register to shop in the bookstore for 50 minutes, with groups staggered by the half hour--appointment times will be 10 AM- 3 PM, with appointments wrapping up by 3:50.  These appointments will be Monday-Friday--we’re going to be closed Memorial Day, so the program will begin on Tuesday, May 26. Make your first appointment today!
Here are some FAQ's:
For now, appointment shopping will be the only way for the public to enter the bookstore.
Appointments will be Monday-Friday, 10-4, with the last appointment beginning at 3 PM
Each appointment will last 50 minutes, so that we can spend some time on sterilization procedures after each call
Appointments are available to begin every 30 minutes and last 50 minutes each, so there may be two groups in the store at the same time.
To confirm your appointment, you must buy a $25 gift card, which can be used either during your appointment or afterwards, when you’re shopping from home. Please make this purchase when you choose a date and time for your appointment, not separately, so we can associate the gift card with your visit.
During your visit, all members of your party and all booksellers in the store will be required to wear masks. You’ll be asked to wash or sterilize your hands upon arrival
Parties will be limited to three adults with up to three children, with no children under 5 admitted (they can’t reliably wear masks)
A personal bookseller will be assigned to your party during each appointment. They will help you with recommendations and will also enforce COVID-19 protocols like mask-wearing and social distancing.
Appointments will be made on a new page on our website, which is now live.
The science hasn't changed--it's still best to stay at home, wear masks, wash hands, and maintain appropriate distance from others, until vaccines and treatments are developed. So Gibson's will continue to encourage you to shop from home on our website. We still have our 99-cent shipping program, for orders over $20, and we are also now allowing curbside pick-up, from 10-4, Monday-Saturday.

Please keep sending orders our way.  They are our bridge to a post-COVID19 future.

A note about delivery times: around the country, publisher and distributor warehouses have instituted new procedures to keep their workers safe. This necessarily means that deliveries are slower than we are used to.  The post office is also over-worked and under-funded. We urge everyone to put aside all notions of immediate gratification and accept the idea that good things are worth waiting for.  We're working to get your books to you ASAP.
If you can't think of a book to buy, try our gift cards, also available as online only gift codes. They'll still be good when this crisis is over. We need your continuing support. And we're grateful for it!

Events are Going Virtual

We're closed to the public, so we can't do in-person author events. But it's still our mission to connect readers with writers, and the way we're doing that now is through virtual, online events. You can ask questions and otherwise interact with the authors during some online events, and you can buy signed books through our website.   Click the images below for more info and for ways to join the events online.  Check our events schedule often to learn about new virtual events coming up.
Coming up, we have
  • Former U.S. Diplomat Elizabeth Shackelford, in a virtual event co-hosted by the World Affairs Council of NH.  Tues., May 26, 6 PM
  • Bestselling author John Grisham, in conversation with Gibson's owner Michael Herrmann on Facebook Live.  This will be Wed., May 27, at noon--details here
  • Authors Elizabeth Marshall Thomas and Isa Leshko, in a conversation moderated by Sy Montgomery, about how humans and animals grow old--Fri., May 29, 8 PM

Past event recordings

Here's a good bookmark to remember. Some of our past virtual events are preserved online, so you can view them at your convenience. Right now we have our event with Sandell Morse and Becky Rule archived there, along with Rage Baking authors Kathy Gunst and Katherine Alford's discussion, and an interview with Enter the Aardvark author Jessica Anthony,. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to learn about more virtual events coming up and archived online.

Other ways we're keeping in touch online

Our podcast, The Laydown, continues! Check out recent episodes here. We've also begun a new program called Brunch with a Bookseller. Gibson's booksellers will take part in unscripted Zoom sessions talking about what's new, what's hot, and what's just interesting in the world of books, with video available on our Facebook page. These will usually be hosted on our Facebook page around 10 AM every Thursday.

Everyone be well!

Thanks for reading this far. We are so grateful for your support.
