pALS Newsletter - May 2021

We are excited to share our Spring newsletter filled with information, tips, and stories. Part of our mission at Team Gleason is to be a resource and connect with pALS and cALS around the country.
Spring has sprung! BIG THANKS to all of you who were able to support us on GiveNOLA Day this year! Because of your support, we won the most number of unique donors for the 8th year in a row! We would not have been able to achieve this without the support from so many of you. As Steve would say, "Awesome Ain't Easy," but you are all awesome!

Staff Highlight: Chontayia StPe

Chontayia StPe
Technology & Equipment Associate
As Team Gleason continues to broaden our reach and empower those affected by ALS, our team has also been growing. Though some of you may have already met her in person or had the pleasure of working with her, we would like to introduce you to Chontayia "Shon" St.Pe, the newest addition to Team Gleason.

Shon is known for her ready to assist personality; she is always willing to lend a helping hand with a smile on her face. What you may not know about Shon is that she enjoys writing poetry and music in her free time. Shon also has two adorable toddlers, and they love to spend time dancing. She is even teaching her kids ballet.

When asked about what her favorite thing about working at Team Gleason is, she said it's being able to assist so many people. She enjoys surrounding herself with people who are passionate about their work and can help find solutions to empower people to better their quality of life which are also things she has found at Team Gleason.

pALS Testimonial: Annie McFee

Team Gleason had the pleasure of assisting Annie with a grant for a Permobil Seat Elevator, and she was kind enough to send us this amazing video to share with all of you. The seat elevating mechanism is a feature that is often denied by insurance.
Annie's seat elevator allows her to continue staying busy in the kitchen!
We work with power wheelchair manufacturers to provide grants and cover the cost of the feature as long as you provide us with proof that insurance has denied the seat elevator feature and that the power wheelchair has not been ordered.

Participate in Google's Project Euphonia

For millions of people around the world who are living with dysarthria, face-to-face communication can be very challenging. Using voice-activated technology can be frustrating as well. Project Euphonia, a Google Research project, is focused on improving how such systems recognize impaired speech.
Google needs to collect samples of impaired speech.
Now is your chance to make an impact and help ensure that future individuals can maintain independence through voice-activated technologies.
