A New Approach to Communal Progress: A Message from Gil Preuss
This week, I dove into the topic of Jewish engagement while also being highly engaged myself. For three days, I joined hundreds of Jewish professionals for the first-ever FedLab conference, put on by The Jewish Federations of North America. Together, we tested our assumptions, discussed new ideas, and pushed each other to think creatively about key issues currently facing the Jewish community. What I valued most, however, was being together with a full array of Jewish professionals and volunteer leaders who are working across the sector to strengthen Jewish life.

A Reflection from our Community Shlicha, Noa Bab
On Tuesday, my family and friends woke at 6:00 a.m. Israel time, alarmed by the deafening sound of sirens. The center of Israel – communities in Tel Aviv, Rishon Letziyon, Rehovot, Ashdod, Ashkelon, and along the Gaza border – was under attack by rockets fired from Gaza. Two hours earlier, the Israel Defense Forces had attacked and killed vicious Islamic Jihad leader, Baha Abu el-Ata, who was responsible for planning and executing attacks against Israeli citizens. The rocket fire on Israel continues as of this writing, despite a ceasefire agreement. The reality is hard to bear, especially from afar. But at the same time, I feel the strong support of a community that assures the Israeli people we are not alone.

Young Leaders Harness the Power of Collective Giving
On November 7, local young leaders came together from across Greater Washington to make an incredible impact in just one night. Through a unique, pop-up giving circle experience facilitated by our partners at Amplifier, we explored philanthropy, learned about the needs of our community, and worked together to discover how Jewish values could guide our impact. The result? $9,000 allocated by this generous group will now go to Tzedek DC, supporting the organization’s crucial work to safeguard the legal rights of low-income DC residents.
