LAVENDER CELEBRATION
The Lavender Celebration, sponsored by LGBTQ Life, highlights the accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allied seniors at JHU. Seniors are introduced by someone special to them, and they receive recognition for everything they have achieved as a Blue Jay. The ceremony will be held May 6 (1-3 pm) in the Levering Great Hall. All students and family members are welcome and encouraged to attend! Learn more on Facebook.

In addition to Lavender Graduation, JHU hosts many celebrations for graduates during this time of year. Major- and school-specific events, the Black and Latino Graduate Reception, the Resident Assistant (RA) Graduation Celebration, and more are listed on the Commencement Website!

STUDENT EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
The JHU Student Employment Awards were held April 5 during National Student Employment Week. The awards ceremony recognized students who have made significant contributions to the university through their student employee positions. The nominees desmonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, initiative, creative thinking, and professionalism. The 2017 Undergraduate Student Employee of the Year is Jennifer Aufill '2018. Congratulations to Jennifer and all of this year's nominees!
MAKE A GIFT TO THE HOPKINS PARENTS FUND
What do High Table, the Second-Year Garden Party, the Junior Boat Cruise, and Senior Week (with the highly-anticipated MSee-Ya Party) all have in common?
These class-specific events are all possible because of parent and family philanthropy to the Hopkins Parents Fund. Thank you to the nearly 1,600 Blue Jay Families who have already supported activities and programs for undergraduates outside the classroom.

JHU HOUSING MOVE OUT
If your student lives in a 9-month contract area of a JHU residence hall, they are asked to move out 24 hours after their last final They must be moved out by Friday, May 19 at 12pm (noon). There are no exceptions and all residents must vacate their rooms by 12pm. Here are some tips from Community Living to help ensure a seamless move-out process:
  • Encourage your Blue Jay to start packing a little now, so they don't leave everything until the last minute. Packing supples (boxes, tape, etc.) are available in the Wolman mailroom. Students may also ship items from Wolman, if needed.
  • Students are responsible for cleaning their room. The room should appear the way it did upon move in. Students should vacuum, empty and clean drawers, take out the trash, and disconnect cables. Blue Jay Cleaners, a student-run janitorial service, is available to help. If the room has damage or requires extensive cleaning after move out, your student will be charged.  For multi-occupancy rooms, any charges are split evenly between all residents and they will have to dispute charges among themselves.
  • If your Blue Jay rented a refrigerator, they should be on the lookout for an email from MyFridgeRental.
  • If your Blue Jay has cable installed, Comcast will be collecting cable boxes on campus on May 11 and 12. Cable boxes must be returned directly to Comcast and not to the Housing Office. Students will be charged by Comcast if they fail to return the box.
  • Summer storage is not available on campus. We encourage you to make arrangements early. One option is Hopkins Student Movers, who offer box pickup from the residence hall, storage, and re-delivery for the next academic year.
  • If your Blue Jay wishes to donate items, Goodwill trucks will be on campus from May 10-19. Additionally, bins for toiletries and non-perishables will be located in the residence hall lobbies.
COMMENCEMENT 2017
The countdown to Commencement is on! Last month, we shared our first five tips for families of 2017 graduates. This month, we have five more tips to help ensure a smooth and celebratory graduation day for your Blue Jay and your family. (If you missed last month's tips, review them here!)

1. Tickets ($10 each) are required for the Homewood Senior Picnic. Seating times are available at 11:30am, 12:30pm, and 1:30pm. Remind your student to purchase tickets and reserve seating times.

2. Starting at 9:30am on Wednesday, May 24, JHU will operate a shuttle from Mason Hall to the Royal Farms Arena. Free parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in South Garage on the Homewood campus.

3. Public parking is limited around the Royal Farms Arena. Additionally, the Baltimore Orioles have a 12:30pm baseball game scheduled. Accordingly, we encourage families to consider utilizing the shuttle, public transportation, rideshare services (e.g. Lyft, Uber), or taxis. Information is available on the Commencement Parking and Transportation webpage.

4. On Commencement day (May 24), doors to the Royal Farms Arena will open at 12pm. Student lineup begins at 12:30pm.

5. Stay connected on social media via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Congratulations to all our 2017 graduates and families. If you have any questions, please contact the Commencement Office at 410-516-7711 or commencement@jhu.edu.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS SUMMER
If your student is coming home for the summer, you may be feeling excited and anxious. While you miss your Blue Jay, you and other family members may also have grown accustomed to life without them! When students return home after starting college, conflicts and frustrations can sometimes occur as everyone adjusts to living together again. It can help to address these concerns before they arise. Talk with your Blue Jay and other family members about your expectations for the summer.
What time will you expect your Blue Jay home? How often do you want them to check in with you? Are there family events that you expect your student to attend? Do you expect them to attend family meals? Who will be doing your Blue Jay's laundry? Do you expect them to help out around the house? Do you expect your student to work? Will your Blue Jay be asked to contribute to family expenses?
Remember that your student has been setting their own schedule and making their own decisions since arriving at JHU. Finding a compromise among everyone's expectations will help to ensure a happy summer for all.

It's not too late for your student to take advantage of all the Career Center has to offer this year! The First-Year Experience and the Second-Year Experience (SYE) Program will host Expedition 2020: Hello from the Other Side for first-year students on May 8, 3-5pm on Homewood Field. The event celebrates our students' first year at JHU and their transition into their second year. Students will have a chance to socialize and learn about resources they can take with them over the summer that will help them prepare to return for their second year.
THE BLUE JAY FAMILIES COOKBOOK
The 1st edition of the Blue Jay Families Cookbook is here! Thank you to all of the families who submitted recipes. Recipes were shared with students as part of JHU's "HOP OUT" series (presented by the Second-Year Experience (SYE) Program and the Off-Campus Housing Office) and will continue to be available on the Blue Jay Families website.
We encourage you to continue to send in your submissions as we will be updating the cookbook regularly and hope to see it grow to be a robust resource for our Blue Jays!
