Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

See the Academy Award-winning Best Animated Film Flow in the Dietrich's Spring 2025 Film Festival

“There are at least two movies in Spring Fest that you need to see on the big screen. The first one is Flow and the second one is The Dawn of Impressionism: Paris 1874 Exhibition on ScreenFlow is a film with no spoken word, the story is told with animation that is simply a work of art.  The Dawn of Impressionism, at least for me, is better than being at the museum.  No crowds, no waiting in line, it is a very up-close experience.”  Erica Rogler, our Executive Director, adds that if she would try to watch it at home, the dog would want to go out or the cat would want a treat or laundry would need to be folded, but in the darkened theater with a big screen, she can truly immerse herself in the story or the beauty of the images.  You are all invited to see these truly extraordinary films during Spring Fest, shown several times in the three-week festival which begins April 25 and ends on May 15.  Check the schedule at www.dietrichtheater.com
Another film that we think will be inspiring and notable is Penguin Lessons, the story of a disillusioned British teacher in Argentina, played by Steve Coogan, whose life is changed when he rescues a penguin.  Another special film is Rule Breakers, the story of Afghan girls who break Taliban rules to compete in robotics.  The Friend is sure to be a crowd pleaser with Bill Murray and Naomi Watts.  It is the story of Iris whose life is forever changed after her best friend dies and she is bequeathed a 150 pound Great Dane!  And for a fun thriller, starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, directed by Steven Soderbergh, Black Bag is a gripping spy drama.  When his wife is suspected of betraying her nation, will George be loyal to his marriage or his country?  And we know so much about the Beatles, but now we have the movie Midas Man, Brian Epstein, who managed to transform the musical world by bringing the Beatles into our lives.  These are just a few of the 23 foreign and independent films of Spring Festival.  There is truly something for everyone.  Pick up a brochure at the Dietrich or look up the schedule online.
We are so proud of Wyoming County CARES, an organization that does so much to provide services and education related to substance use disorder and recovery. On Thursday, May 1 at 6 p.m. they are sponsoring a free movie event featuring the movie Rocketman, Elton John’s story from shy piano prodigy to superstar and his personal journey through substance use abuse disorder and recovery. Following the film will be a Q and A session. Drug abuse is probably familiar to most of us, and with organizations like CARES I know there are opportunities for recovery out there.  Come to this free showing and discover how to access them.
Finally, my grandson Aidan is coming for Opening Night and he wants to see Flow the next day on Saturday.  I am so glad he does because it is a long tradition of mine and my friends to see the very first film after Opening Night.  We all were volunteer workers to make sure Opening Night went smoothly.  The next day we made sure to come to the first film to just sit back and enjoy.  We invite all of you to come to these amazing films to do just that – to sit back in the darkened theater with no distractions to see and hear a good story.  We hope to see you soon.
