A hotshop is full of beautiful scenes. Even glassblowing tools have their own special elegance. Made for precision, strength, and the ability to endure extreme heat, there's raw grace in their form.

Josh recently used these prewarmed blowpipes to create the vibrantly colored Smooth Corona Portals shown below. This is a limited collection of six works, all different but each made from the same crucible of Josh's wildly variable and striated Corona glass.

Two Simpson Glass Commissions

Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa, incorporates in its educational mission the essential interconnection between art and science. This mission is expressed in three individual museums and a large collection of indoor and outdoor art installations across the campus.

In 2000, Josh was commissioned to create a 12" Megaplanet to celebrate the 25th anniverary of the ISU's Brunnier Art Museum. This year, the Brunnier recognized its 50th anniversary with a second Simpson Glass commission: eleven large plates, also known as Stellar Disks, that depict Josh's interpretation of astrophysical concepts and the working of the Universe. These are now on display at the Brunnier in the solo exhibit, "Imaginative Journeys in Sea and Space." After this show closes on July 27, the Stellar Disks will be displayed in several departments (engineering, art, astrophysics, etc.) throughout campus.

Josh and his wife, retired NASA astronaut Cady Coleman, gave a lively presentation to a packed house at Brunnier Museum about the interplay of art, science, and exploration in their lives.

This month's Infinity Project participant is Ivelin A., who will hide a Planet in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the second oldest continuously inhibited city in the world. Plovdiv's Roman amphitheatre, often used for modern concerts and events, holds secret niches under the seats that are perfect for hiding a little orb. Ivelin says: "When a person holds a Planet, the colors of the glass pull them into a dream-like world of beauty. I can only imagine their joy from discovering such a treasured gift!"
