Field Notes: Nitrogen Management & Climate Change

When we think of nitrogen leaving the fields, we often think of nitrates leached down to groundwater, but the mobility of nitrogen is not just downwards. Nitrogen can also leave the field and be lost to the atmosphere in the form of nitrous oxide, aka laughing gas. But this is no laughing matter. Nitrous oxide is almost 300 times as warming as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and 80% of our nitrous oxide emissions in Wisconsin come from agriculture.

What's on your seed?

Seed treatments have been used for a number of years, mostly for protection against seedling diseases. However, there are a number of seed treatments marketed for protection against a range of pests, including insect, nematodes and seedling pathogens, while others promote health.

Colostrum is critical during calving

Colostrum is packed with important nutrients that increase metabolism and stimulate digestive activity; and antibodies (immunoglobulins) to help to build a calf’s immune system, protecting the calf against diseases. Bovine colostrum is the production of the mammary gland in the 24 hours after calving and it is the first source of nutrients for the calf. In the case of ruminants, including cattle, colostrum is essential.
