Happy New Year!
I know we all welcomed the new year in weeks ago, but this is my first chance to send a greeting to all of you. I do hope that you all are healthy in both mind and body and are weathering everything from the weather to the ongoing frustrations and anxiety surrounding COVID-19.
It has been a very challenging school year for everyone. The Vanguard School is singularly focused on bringing all students back to in-person instruction in a methodical and planful manner. The next time you hear from me, I truly hope I can share that we welcomed all students and staff back to campus on Feb. 16, 2021. As of this writing, we have re-opened with our original hybrid instructional model on Jan. 19, 2021. We welcomed Cohort A back for at least one day (the 19th) and enjoyed seeing staff and students in Cohort B return on Jan. 21 and 22. We will remain in the hybrid instructional model for the week of Jan. 25. Starting the week of Feb. 1, we expect to welcome all Elementary School students and staff back to in-person instruction 4 days/week. In addition, 3 Upper School classrooms will also return to in-person instruction this week for 4 days/week. All remaining students will continue in the hybrid model. On Feb. 16, we expect to welcome all students and staff (except for those students who remain 100% virtual by choice) back on campus for 4 days/week of in-person instruction. Wednesdays will remain virtual for the foreseeable future for deep cleaning and disinfecting our campus. Trust me when I say we all want to see this schedule unfold safely, as planned.
Our Adult and Recreation Services is also back to work planning for summer programming as well as continuing the good work of employment support. We cannot say with 100% confidence that we will be able to facilitate all the enjoyable summer recreational programming, but we are moving forward as if we can. There is reason to be cautiously optimistic. As always, should anything change, we will quickly communicate those changes. But, for now, we are planning for a full summer.
We want to extend a special thank you to the foundations and donors who so generously contributed to the COVID-19 Campaign Fund. With their help, we have purchased over $80,000 in supplies. The expenses for these supplies were unbudgeted and unplanned so we are especially appreciative. The generous hearts of many of our donors have greatly assisted us; however, we will need to continue purchasing supplies as our inventory dwindles. I ask that you consider giving as you can. Thank you for helping us by supporting our COVID-19 Campaign Fund.
Unfortunately, the future is still a bit unclear. We know we will not have any of our standard spring events—the Musical, Spring Alumni Dinner Dance, Community Day and concerts. We are monitoring all the signs to determine what late spring will bring for our students, adult participants and staff. We are especially concerned about being able to hold the special events that honor our seniors. Time will tell.
Thank you for your continued show of support and patience. I wish you all good health and safety in these turbulent times. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter!
