Matthew 17:1-2
After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.  There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
New International Version (NIV)
At a funeral for a lovely lady this weekend, I heard her granddaughter sing the Watermark song called “Captivate Us.”  Remember how it starts?  “Your face is beautiful and your eyes are like the stars.  Your gentle hands have healing, there within the scars . . .”

How do you envision Jesus’ appearance?  My whole life I have seen artists’ portraits.  Some had Jesus with light hair and blue eyes.  I suppose that is possible, but it seems unlikely.  Probably Jesus resembled the people who lived in the part of the world where he was born.

John and Peter and James knew what Jesus looked like.  Or at least they thought they did.  Then one day they received the gift of a front row seat to his glory.  They went up the mountain away from the other disciples and the crowds.  Jesus was transfigured right in front of them.

Jesus promised that some would see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.  If we could see Jesus as he really is we would see a King unlike any other.  Whenever anybody in ancient times saw an angel from heaven it was unsettling.  Those angels were not cuddly little cupids but mighty warriors.  The Psalmist says God wraps himself in light.  To see Christ is to know that he is not some diminutive deity or local Lord whom we can trifle with or trivialize.  He is the sovereign Lord of all.   If we saw him we could say with the song, “Captivate us, Lord Jesus with you . . .”
Pray with me:
Father, may we be entranced with your beauty today.  With Moses we dare to say, “Show us your glory.”  Like the Psalmist we say, “Let the light of your face shine on us, that we may be saved, that we may have life.”  In name of our radiant King we pray.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
