Psalm 16:11
 You make known to me the path of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,
    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
New International Version (NIV)
                 Are you on the right road?  When I was in college my brothers and I would leave Waco in the afternoon and drive to my parents' home in Great Falls, Montana.  The 1600 mile trip took 30 hours or so by car.  Around midnight we would trade drivers and leave Amarillo.  Then around 2  A.M. the new driver would awaken us with the words, "What are we doing in Oklahoma?"  He missed the turn to Raton, New Mexico and headed into the western part of Oklahoma.   Then we would backtrack to get back on the right road.  This happened more than once.  I should mention that I once took an unintended detour to  South Dakota on the way back home.

                Our pluralistic world often pretends that any road will do.  That may be true, if you don't care where you are going.    The Psalmist understood that some roads lead to destruction and death, while one path leads to life.  God is not hiding the way to life.  Though we love to conceal, God loves to reveal the path to life.

                What happens when we take the right road?  God will fill us with joy in his presence.  By the way, there is no other way to joy except in his presence.  God does not want to harm us but to heal us, help us and fill us with hope.  The pleasures of right relationship with God far exceed the temporary thrills of this life.  Don't you love the Psalmist's confidence.  God is the way to joy and pleasure forever.  There is no other.  So what are we doing on any other road besides Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life.  Backtrack if you need to and head straight to Christ.  He will get you home!

Pray with me:
Father, we sheep are prone to wander.  We often miss the mark.  Show us the path that leads to life and give us the courage to leave the temporary in favor of the eternal.  Thank you for the joy we find in your presence.  Keep us close to you today, we pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
