She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

Do you ever feel invisible?  I walked into a Starbucks on the river walk wearing a baseball cap.  I was at a convention but I didn't think anyone knew me. My illusions were shattered when a pastor friend called me by name and asked, "Do you think your cap makes you invisible?"  We laughed!

In the ancient world slaves were often invisible to others.  Who noticed?  Who cared about their lives?  Perhaps Hagar, Sarah's slave girl wished nobody had noticed her. She did not ask to bear Abraham's child.  When Sarah resented her, Hagar ran for her life.  She would die alone in the desert and no one would know.  

But the angel of the Lord searched for her and found her.  Then the angel told her she would bear a son.  There in the desert she called God a name.  Elroi means the God who sees.  

Have you seen Elroi too?  The God who sees us wants us to see him.  We are never alone or invisible.  God sees us everywhere we go and cares for us.  If we open our eyes we will see him, too.  We should definitely open our eyes.  How shall we live in view of the merciful God who watches over us?
Pray with me:        
God who sees us, help us to see you.  Let us live knowing that you always see us. Enable us to submit to you, our Master.  Let us do your will today.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
