One of my favorite basketball commentators often observes, “Wingspan matters.” In other words, it is not only the height of a player but also the length of their arms which aids them in playing the game. So how long is your wingspan? Often the wingspan matches a person’s height. So a person who is six feet tall would likely have a six foot wingspan. This made me wonder: what is God’s wingspan?
When the Israelites grew weary of manna, they complained about the lack of protein in their diets. Whining aloud, they remembered the meat back in Egypt. God heard their complaints and told Moses to promise them thirty days worth of meat. Moses demurred, mainly because it seemed impossible to him. Six hundred thousand men plus women and children would consume a lot of meat in a month. God answered Moses by asking, “Are you doubting my wingspan?” Is the Lord’s arm too short? Do you think I can’t do this? Moses was on record, doubting God’s ability. Then the quail came and everyone had meat.
What about us? How long is our list of things God could not possibly do? When God wants to work a miracle, he often begins with an impossible situation. Let’s take the chance today to consider the contours of our infinite God. After all he has done for us, can we ever doubt his ability to provide everything we need? Wingspan matters. God’s wingspan is infinite so his arms are never too short to reach us or to give us what we need. All of our fear is caused by calculating without God.
