John 6:35
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
New International Version (NIV)
Who are you?  Complete the sentence, “I am . . .”  Jesus knows who he is!  At least seven times in the Gospel of John he pronounces his identity for all to hear.  When we come to know who he is, we come to understand better who we are in Christ.  “I am the bread of life . . .”
Jesus fed thousands of people on a number of occasions.  Once they wanted to make him their King.  On this occasion they hint at their hunger.  Jesus never intended to be a quick meal ticket.  He wanted them to find their satisfaction not in what he gave but in who he was.  He still does.
Do you ever wonder how manna would taste?  What were the loaves like when Jesus multiplied them.  Was better bread ever made?  Jesus is the living bread, the one who satisfies all of our hungers and thirsts.  He fulfills the Psalmists conclusion in Psalm 91, “With long life I will satisfy them and show them my salvation.”
When we come to Jesus we no longer hunger.  The bread of heaven feeds us until we want no more.  When we believe in him, we do not live our lives thirsting for something to make us whole.   Taste and see.  The Lord is inestimably good.
Pray with me:
Father, in this week of feasting, we pray that the food we eat will not dull our hunger and thirst for you.  Fill our hungry souls with the food that really satisfies.  Make us grateful for your greatest gift, the gift of your Son who satisfies our souls.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
