John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
New International Version (NIV)
The sheep made their getaway at 4:30 in the morning in Huesca, Spain.  Their shepherd dozed off at an inopportune moment and was jolted awake by the tap of a policeman’s finger on his shoulder.   All he lost were thirteen hundred sheep which proceeded to wander through the streets of the city.  With the help of the police he rounded them up and completed their journey into the Pyrenees mountains.  After 36 years as a shepherd, I can vouch for how difficult It can be to keep up with sheep who want to wander.
The prophet Ezekiel spoke about bad shepherds who neglected their sheep.  Jesus came as the good Shepherd laying down his life for his sheep.  But looking at the crowd of false religious leaders around him, he compared them to thieves who wanted to steal, kill and destroy.  To this day we suffer from leaders in our government, entertainment industry and churches who are in it for themselves.  These false leaders abuse their power to harm others, stealing, killing and destroying.
Give thanks today for our life-giving Shepherd.  What does God want for us?  He wants us to live and he wants us to live fully.  As David put it in the great 23rd Psalm, “my cup overflows,” and again in Psalm 16, “You make known to me the path of life.”  Jesus reminds us that there are two distinct ways of life:  the way of sin which leads to death and the way of walking with our Shepherd which always leads to life.  Choose life today and follow Jesus.
Pray with me:
Father, protect your flock from any who would harm us.  Open our eyes to see the malicious intent of the leader who has no real interest in  the life you give.  Draw us with cords of love again to the Savior who has come to give us abundant life.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
