Julia Tronnier, Program Manager and Student Services Specialist

Julia Tronnier
UW-Stout Online Student Services Specialist
How long have you worked for UW-Stout Online?
I have been working part-time at UW-Stout for 6.5 years.  Before that I was a part-time master's student.
What is your role in UW-Stout Online?
I am a student services specialist for several academic programs, as well as the program manager for the general education course sequence offered to our undergraduate degree-seeking students as part of our degree-completion component. In addition, I serve as the exceptions process coordinator for the entire campus.
What do you like most about working with the online programs?
I like the team of folks I work with here in Stout Online. I like that we are helping to bring education and degree-completion possibilities to students, who, for one of a million different reasons, are not able to make attending classes on campus a part of their life right now.
Is there other professional information you would like to share?
I worked in human resources and in training before my role here. I liked those areas and find that they, in many ways, complement my responsibilities now.
What place in the U.S. would you most like to visit and why?
I enjoy visiting beachy places – anywhere!  I feel like that is a question that answers itself!

List five qualities you try to live by:
  1. Appreciate
  2. Enjoy
  3. Live
  4. Smile
  5. Embrace
What is one of your favorite quotes?
Do one thing every day that makes you happy!

What do you want to be doing in 10 years?
I just want to do the best I can do every day, and the days 10 years from now will unfold how they are meant to.

If you could give the world one piece of advice, what would it be?
Study hard!

Accessibility Do's in Online Course Design
  • Color: Black text on white background = most readable.
  • Font: Use only sans serif fonts (e.g., Arial and Helvetica) as these are easiest to read for those with poor vision.
  • Quizzes/Tests: Allow students with disabilities “extended time” on their online quizzes/tests.
  • Media: Link names must be clear. Do not use “click here” or “more” as a hyperlink. Be as descriptive as possible/necessary.
  • Communication: Using chat is not a great feature to use for many different reasons, one being screen reader technology is not compatible with most course management system chat features.
  • Structure: Group items (e.g., course materials and activities) and sort chronologically as students may use them.
  • Accommodation Statement: Include an accommodation statement in the course or in the syllabus, along with the contact information for the disability services office and/or website.
  • Aria Landmarks, Forms: Main, Navigation, Search landmarks will help enhance accessibility.
  • HTML: Use heading tags because screen readers are able to identify them as navigational aids.
