Walsh University is proud to announce that its Collegiate Purple Star designation has been renewed by the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE), affirming the university’s ongoing commitment to serving students with military backgrounds. Walsh is among nine colleges and universities in Ohio to receive renewal of the designation this year for strong support of military-connected students.

From Dayton to Asheville the Blouin Scholars Confront Aging and Poverty in America |
The Blouin Scholars cohort of rising juniors, who are focusing their studies on aging and poverty, traveled in May to several regions of the United States to explore how these issues appear in different communities and socioeconomic contexts. The group began the week in Dayton, Ohio, where they learned about the ongoing legacy of redlining and its impact on lower socioeconomic neighborhoods. They also visited a YMCA community center that provides programs and support for underserved senior citizens. Next, the Scholars traveled to Charleston, West Virginia, where they served in a food pantry, helping prepare and distribute meals for individuals experiencing poverty. They also visited a homeless shelter that can house up to 200 people per night, assisting by cleaning and sanitizing beds and organizing a storage unit.
The final stop was Asheville, North Carolina, where the group visited a Christian community mission where they participated in service work and learned about workforce development and training programs supporting people experiencing poverty. While in Asheville, the students also witnessed the lingering effects of a recent flood with many residents still displaced from their homes.
“It was an eye-opening experience, and it really opened their hearts to see how people in these different areas are impacted differently. It was really nice to see how the communities came together to help these populations make a difference. This experience also gave our students a vision for how we can make a difference here at home,” said Marc Biss, Associate Professor of Communication, who co-led the group.
