An Excruciatingly Opinionated Guide to the Connecticut Shoreline
Calendar Eat Shop Travel Fun Be Well Town Guides
After being stuck inside all of March (literally; between snowstorms and rotator cuff surgery), I am sick to death of looking at my house. Don’t get me wrong, my Cape is more than cozy and suits us well. Plus barring a gut renovation, there’s really nothing left to do. But a girl likes to dream, and mine run to fantasy outbuildings! I’m not exactly sure why tiny houses have captivated us, but they have. Me, I wouldn’t want to live in one, but love the idea of a smallish separate structure to escape to (oh, that’s right! I have one! My office in the barn!). A few local architects and designers are up to some interesting things and I’ve featured them here. Enjoy.

An Award-Winning Modern Poolhouse
Architect Chris Arelt recently won first place in the 2017 CTC&G Innovation & Design Awards for a structure here in Lyme. Intrigued and always nosey, I raced over to have a peek. After passing through a non-descript ranch (its reconstruction will be phase two of the project), I came upon a...

A Modern Shed
I’ve long been fascinated with the idea of shipping containers repurposed for living spaces, and in this age of reclaiming/recycling, it makes more sense than ever. It seems like an easy and modern fix for an outbuilding. studio or poorhouse. Block Design Build, the team who built my barn and office, is clearly...

CT River Valley Mural at Black Whale Antiques
When I arrived on the Shoreline almost 20 years ago, it was an antique lovers’ haven. Most towns boasted a bunch of shops. The internet has decimated the industry, but I still like to sniff out a good one for a Sunday outing. Black Whale in East Haddam is a fun...

Spotted! Tribal Textiles at Total Design Source
I have a weakness for fabrics (dating back to my textile courses in college), especially hand-printed ones. Batiks, wood block printing, and painting create dimension and texture on an otherwise flat surface. I spied this cotton yardage by Tribal Textiles at ...

THE ART OF THE GRILL at Guilford Marketplace

The Marketplace is your center for grilling – from catered events to backyard barbeques.  “We can do it all,” exclaims Ray Rosa, Head Grill Master. “All American BBQ’s, Lobster Bakes, to Country Style Pig Roasts, we provide full-service custom grill events for 20 to 250 guests.”

“You have to begin with
high-quality meat and fish when thinking about what to grill,” says Ron Rosa, Head Butcher at The Marketplace.  “Look for great marbling, texture and color when you are choosing your protein.” The Marketplace continues to grind their own beef, and they are now offering new burger and sausage combos like Sirloin & Chorizo and Smoked Cheddar Bacon. Chef Andrea Dante has created new marinades to give meat, fish or veggies an extra kick of flavor. From Chipotle Lime and Thai Basil & Ginger to exotic Spicy Moroccan blend, she's got something to please every palate.
