All week we have been celebrating International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative of the Department of State and the Department of Education. Check out our Twitter and (brand new!) Instagram to see the fun we've been up to at Central Office and in classrooms around the District. 
The application for 2017-2018 Study Abroad closed this week, with a record-breaking number of applicants. Congratulations to all students who worked hard to submit their applications! We look forward to meeting our next batch of student travellers in the coming months. 
Earlier this month, the DCPS Global Ed team conducted a training session for Travel Ambassadors of the Study Abroad Program. Check out photos of the training, together with some fun events with embassy partners from the Embassy Adoption Program (EAP) below!

We are in need of substitutes for DCPS World Language classrooms. Interested candidates must be fluent in one of the 7 languages taught at DCPS (Arabic, ASL, Chinese, French, Italian, Latin, or Spanish) and have a Bachelor’s Degree. Professional Development & Educator Opportunities

The European Union and Brexit Workshop
World Affairs Council DC is hosting a free educator workshop at the National Press Club on understanding the European Union in the time of Brexit. Gain a better understanding of the economic and global implications of an EU without Britain and a Britain without the EU. Earn five professional development credit hours and enjoy a free breakfast and lunch. More information here

Youth Forum: North Korea and Today's Nuclear Crisis
This forum for both teachers and students will explore U.S. foreign policy in North Korea, while also exploring the role China has to play in the conflict. Students and teachers will hear from experts on North Korea, China, and nuclear weapons and engage in a simulation. Please see the flyer here for more information.

Fund for Teachers
Fund for Teachers enriches the personal and professional growth of teachers by recognizing and supporting them as they identify and pursue opportunities around the globe that will have the greatest impact on their practice, the academic lives of their students, and their school communities. Full-time PK-12 teachers, with at least 3 years teaching experience, may apply for up to $5,000 individually for a summer learning experience of their own design. A team of teachers may apply for up to $10,000. More information here.

NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellowship
Through the NEA Global Learning Fellowship, K-12 educators develop the knowledge and skills to integrate global competency into their daily classroom instruction, advocate for global competency within their schools and districts, and help students thrive in our increasingly interconnected world. This fully-funded 12-month professional development program includes in-person workshops, online coursework, webinars by leading experts, peer learning, and an international field experience (expected to be South Africa) in late July 2019. Teaching Tolerance Educator Grants
Teaching Tolerance will be awarding grants ranging from $500-$10,000 to further their mission to support educators who embrace and embed anti-bias principles throughout their schools. Teaching Tolerance grants will fund three different types of projects: classroom-level, school-level and district-level. Whether implemented at the school, classroom or district level, Teaching Tolerance seeks to fund projects that culminate in measurable student outcomes and demonstrable student work. Learn more here
Peace Corps Global Connections Program 
Join the Peace Corps' Global Connections program to bring a global perspective to any learning environment this school year. World Wise Schools has designed the program to fit teachers' needs, allowing teachers to connect learners with current volunteers from around the world through a variety of shared experiences such as webinars, social media platforms, and pen-pal exchanges. Submit a request now!

Connect with a returned volunteer to enrich students' intercultural awareness and communication skills through the Peace Corps World 
Wise Schools

Asia Society's Center for Global Education Program
A free professional development course and toolkit for career and technical education (CTE) instructors from Asia Society's Centre  for Global Education Program in partnership with ACTE and Advance CTE is available to help educators prepare students to be more globally competitive. United States Diplomacy Center Simulation Programs
The United States Diplomacy Center trains teachers to run simulations to expose students to the world of foreign affairs and help them develop global skills. In simulations, students work together, as opposing countries with competing interests, to find solutions. More information here.

Global Student Opportunities

Operation Understanding DC (OUDC)
 Each fall OUDC selects African-American and Jewish juniors from DC area schools to take part in this one-year (Jan-Dec) leadership program. Students learn about their respective histories and cultures, take part in a three-week summer travel program to sites of historic interest to African Americans and Jews, and return the following fall for leadership training and to lead diversity seminars.Click here for more information and to apply.

YES Abroad Application Open
Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the YES Abroad scholarship offers American high school students the chance to live with host families and study for one academic year in countries that may include: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, Thailand, and Turkey. Living with a host family and attending a local school, participants promote mutual understanding between the United States and the host country by forming lasting relationships with the local community. Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX)
CBYX offers American high school students the opportunity to live and study abroad in Germany for a full academic year through joint sponsorship by the U.S. Congress and German Bundestag. This fully-funded program includes cultural immersion through living with a host family and attending a German high school; intensive language course upon arrival in Germany; and meetings with U.S. and German government officials. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, ages 15-18, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. For more information and to apply, click here or here

Experiment Leadership Institute Full Scholarships
The Experiment in International Living (EIL) equips students with essential leadership, language, and problem-solving skills, while also cultivating global competency and a complex understanding of the world. EIL offers two Leadership Institute programs in summer 2018: India: Public Health and Community Development and South Africa: Youth Leadership in Peace, Politics, and Human Rights. These fully-funded, highly-competitive, six-week programs are for rising seniors who are 16-18 years of age at the time of the program. The programs consist of a four-day leadership seminar in DC, four weeks in country (India or South Africa), and four days of project-planning sessions in Brattleboro, Vermont at the School for International Training (SIT) campus. A follow-up student student project is required. 30 full scholarships are available. For more information and to apply, click here.

Citizen Diplomacy Initiative
Based in Washington D.C., Learning Life is an educational nonprofit that seeks to spread learning in everyday life beyond school walls.  Learning Life’s Citizen Diplomacy Initiative (CDI) is a new, free program that engages eligible lower-income American families, starting in Washington DC’s Ward 8, in live internet dialogues and project collaborations with families in other nations to nurture more informed, skilled, connected and caring global citizens in the long-term.  Here is a short video explaining the program; you can also learn more here. American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Essay Contest
This year's AFSA Essay contest is now open! The AFSA is accepting submissions of essays on why diplomacy and peacebuilding matter. The writer of the winning essay will receive $2,500 and an all-expenses-paid educational voyage. Essays must be between 1,000 and 1,250 words. For more information, click here
