Habakkuk 3:16-19
I heard and my heart pounded,
    my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
    and my legs trembled.
Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity
    to come on the nation invading us.
Though the fig tree does not bud
    and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
    and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
    and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
    I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The Sovereign Lord is my strength;
    he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
    he enables me to tread on the heights.

New International Version (NIV)
                 “When I get to heaven, I’m going to ask about that.”  I hear people say this sometimes.  If you could ask God any question, what would you say?  Habakkuk had a concern about the kinds of people God used to fulfil his purpose.  Although he knew his people had sinned, he couldn’t figure out why God would use the wicked Babylonians to execute his judgment on them.  So he asked, “Why?”  Then he waited.

                God answered the prophet in his own timing.  He explained that he would use whomever he chose to judge his own people.  God said that ultimately he would also judge the ones who took his people into exile.  Finally God called for quiet, “The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.”

                Habakkuk admitted he was in awe of the Almighty.  Then he spoke his trust in God.  Even if everything goes badly, Habakkuk commits to rejoice in God.  Because the Sovereign Lord is his strength, he waits for God to help him climb the heights like a deer.

                This summer, I hope to return to St. Mary’s Falls in Glacier National Park.  I’ve only been there a few times.  The first time I stood and watched the melted snow water cascade down a mountain into a crystal blue pool.  While gravity carried the water down, three deer climbed upward beside the waterfall.  Only God could enable them to go on the heights.   I stood in awe at the beauty.  The same God who enables deer to deftly defy gravity will also give us strength to endure and climb higher for him.  Stand silently before him today.  He is on his throne.
Pray with me:
Father, we stand in awe of you.  Your ways are often incomprehensible to us.  Nevertheless, we trust you.  Come what may, we trust you.  Take us upward today so that we do not drift in the misty flats all day long.  Give us a glimpse of your glory today, we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
