Exodus 18:24
Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
New International Version (NIV)
What if every son-in-law listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said?  Of course, every father-in-law appreciates this verse.  Sons-in-law may not be so sure.

Moses struggled with work/life balance like a person who lives in our world.  He had left his wife and sons with his father-in-law Jethro while he got the Israelites on track.  Jethro rejoiced in God’s goodness to Israel, but he wondered at Moses’ exhausting practice of hearing every dispute.  One million people can have a lot of arguments.  Jethro proposed that Moses delegate the minor issues to others.

This idea continues into the New Testament.  Instead of saying, “If it is to be, then it’s up to me,” pastors are supposed to equip the saints to do the work of ministry.  Moody said I would rather teach ten to do the work than to do the work of ten.  At Saddleback Church in California pastor Rick Warren told his members:  I will make sure that you are well-fed from the Bible but you will have to do the work of ministry.  Have we found our place in the work of the kingdom?  Let us do the things that only we can do, and encourage others to do their part as well.

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the wisdom of those who encourage us to delegate.  Help us to be faithful to fulfill your calling and purpose in our lives.  Forgive us for overfunctioning so that others may underfunction.  Open our ears to hear your calling for our lives and our hearts to teach others to fulfill their calling as well.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
