Math Curriculum Revised
UW-Stout’s math curriculum was recently revised to give students an experience that more closely mirrors the requirements at other UW System campuses. Please see the descriptions below.
MATH 90 – Intermediate Algebra (4 credits)
  • Enrollment Requirement – Prerequisite: One year high school algebra and math placement score of level 1, or MATH 010 or higher.
  • Description  Basic algebraic skills: factoring, exponents, rational expressions, linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, quadratic equations, and an introduction to functions. Credit earned for MATH 90 will not count towards graduation.
NOTE: In Access Stout, search for MATH 90 and NOT for MATH 090.
MATH 118 – Concepts of Mathematics (4 credits)
  • Enrollment Requirement  Prerequisite: Take MATH 90 or MATH 110, or a math placement score of 2 or higher.
  • Description - Introductory concepts in mathematics such as functions, sets, geometry, combinatorics, probability and other current mathematical topics, along with practical applications to modern life.

How long have you worked for Stout Online?
I have been with the university since fall 2014 completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Interactive Media. I have worked for Stout Online since fall 2016.
What is your current role in Stout Online?
My current role is to service students as their on-campus representative. I advocate for the progression of the learner and seek to support them throughout their educational endeavors, whether that is taking the time to listen to their ambitions, assembling an approach to help them fulfill their goals or directing them to resources they can implement throughout their journey. I also work closely with program directors to assess needs and manage retention rates.
What do you like most about working with the online programs?
Having the opportunity to assist students in achieving success is what I like best about working with the online programs. Finding ways to share insight and make connections with others is also highly important to me.
Is there other professional information you would like to share?
Before my current position, I was a student-employee with the Stout Online instructional design team. That was an opportunity to actively participate in my campus community, and interact, relate and learn from staff and faculty who I would not otherwise have known having been just a student.
Looking back now, the more I have taken part in the initiations that my department has put forth, the fonder I have grown of my colleagues and the work environment that the Grad School and Stout Online provides.
What place in the U.S. would you most like to visit and why?
As an early childhood ambition of mine, I have always wanted to travel to each of the United States to discover all the diversity that rests in my home country.
Helpful Tips, Strategies and Methods to Becoming a Successful Online Student
This is the third in a series of five mini-articles to help you succeed.
The Importance of Time Management and a Designated Learning Space
While online education can happen anywhere, with the proper access and technology, getting the most out of learning still demands time and
focus.
Consider these strategies for where and when to study:
  • Make sure the space is away from the flow of your normal activities.
  • It should be reasonably quiet and comfortable, with good lighting.
  • And somewhere you can concentrate and focus with few interruptions.
  • Identify 2-3 learning places  at your workplace, at home and somewhere you frequent often, such as a library or coffee shop
  • Determine specific times to study  an hour or two on certain days of the week  and commit to the activity, such as for homework, reading and testing
  • Deliberately plan times to log in daily, to stay abreast of changes and class notifications

10 Current Trends and Issues in Instructional Design
  1. Instructionally designed courses are being further supplemented with social/cognitive web environments, learning portals and intelligent tutoring systems.
  2. Designing and developing instructional video games is popular right now, especially those that are simulation or empathy-based.
  3. Game-based learning is evolving to be more authentic in nature, and can even be a form of professional development for the learner.
  4. Instructional designers are designing and developing virtual learning environments for students, incorporating motivation and assessment into the experience.
  5. Interactive print (i.e., the combination of text and augmented reality) will likely increase student interaction when added to learning environments.
  6. Instructional designers are no longer applying one single design model per program or course. Instead, they are employing multiple models, methods and theories per program/course.
  7. Instructor-student communication, and instructor social presence, remains an issue in online courses.
  8. Containing student information, data and privacy is a continuous problem in the development of enhanced e-learning activities.
  9. Designing for culture continues to be an underrepresented approach.
  10. As instructor and student needs and demands grow and expand, future instructional designers — those in training — will need a much larger skill set than ever before, especially in the areas of learning analytics, student performance and educational games, as examples.
