Supporting Your Student Through the
College Admissions Process
|
|
|
The college search is an opportunity for students to engage in self-reflection and discovery. College counselors work with each student to personalize the process and guide students to find institutions of higher education that are the best fit for them. Students are encouraged to reflect on their individual interests, engage in self-advocacy and aim for a healthy balance in life. Ultimately, the process encourages students to make the most of their high school experience while simultaneously discovering a college where they can build upon that foundation.
A strong high school community will provide holistic support for a student’s educational and personal journeys. Mentors, advisors, coaches and counselors support students to become lifelong learners, ready to meet the challenges of life beyond high school. The college search process is a time for students to evaluate their own strengths and craft their unique story. They will learn to exercise decision-making skills and will grow in independence.
Students and parents alike are encouraged to resist the urge to compare one student's journey to that of others. It is a student’s ability to identify their own path that breeds confidence, strength and resilience.

Engaging in a supportive and healthy college admissions process for families and teens:
-
Honor and celebrate interests: Encourage students to pursue their individual interests. Find ways to help students explore their passions - sometimes these are inspired by a favorite book, movie, summer experience or research project. Colleges applaud students who “geek out.” When pursuing something one is truly passionate about, accomplishments will come naturally.
-
Hold mindful discussions: Designate a specific day and time to engage in conversations about college. It is easy to want to talk about the process whenever you’re together, but this often creates pressure and stress. Allowing space for these discussions supports a healthy balance.
-
Encourage self-advocacy: Once a young adult turns 18, there are many things they will need to do on their own. The college process is no different. Colleges value students who can speak up for themselves and take independent initiative.
-
Keep an open mind: There are many paths to success. Students who remain open to exploring a range of institutions and programs often find options they didn’t imagine at the outset and wind up with a greater variety of choices. Families can support a healthy college process by encouraging students in this exploration.
