Dear constituents and friends,
Next weekend on January 31st I am taking some time to have two constituent meetings to talk to voters in my district about my work this session and what to expect out of the legislature in the coming months. Due to COVID-19, these meetings will be held virtually and offered at two times, in the morning and afternoon, on January 31st. During these two virtual town halls I will talk about my committee assignments -- currently I am serving on the Joint Committee On Ways and Means as Co-Chair for the Ways and Means Subcommittee On Human Services, and I am the Vice-Chair of the House Committee On Behavioral Health, some of the bills I am introducing, and what I think we can expect from the coming session as well as taking as many of your questions that I can..
On the Behavioral Health Committee, I will be looking at bills to improve our mental and behavioral health delivery system as well as improving compensation for mental and behavioral health professionals and providing more onramps for people of color to enter the behavioral health professions. The behavioral health committee will also be tasked with the implementation of Measure 110 and Measure 109 and fixing inequities in access to behavioral health services across Oregon.
On the Ways and Means Committee, our job is to allocate spending of 100 billion dollars in federal and state funds for the state’s two year biennial budget. As part of the Human Services Subcommittee, I will be working on crafting the budgets for the Oregon Health Authority which is primarily responsible for the Oregon Health Plan and the state Hospital and public health – all things pandemic and COVID 19 and , the Department of Human Services -- services for those with developmental disabilities, the TANF program, food stamps, child welfare, and more.
The House Democratic caucus will also be prioritizing issues relating to public health – again all things pandemic and COVID 19, housing access, and climate change particularly as it relates to wildfires. There will also be a strong focus on examining all legislation and budgets with an eye toward equity and advancing racial justice. I also look forward to hearing what is important to you and your priorities. If you have a question that I can answer at our town hall, write it down on the RSVP and I will try to give priority to answering those first.
