2022 CAFO Update Series

Jointly sponsored by UW Madison Division of Extension's Conservation Professional Training Program and Wisconsin DNR, these workshops are designed for livestock operations near or at WPDES permit size (CAFOs) -- owners/management and key staff, their agronomic and engineering consultants, and agency staff and others who work with these operations.

Redefining the Soil Health Conversation

The keynote speaker at this Farmer Roundtable event is Keith Berns, Co-Owner of Green Cover Seed in Bladen, NE. Keith has over 20 years of no-till farming experience on 2,000 acres and teaches about cover crops and soil health. His presentation will focus on the seven things he has learned about cover crops. Advance registration is required and closes on February 4, 2022.

Financial Losses from Transition Period Diseases

Replacing dairy cows in the dairy herd is a major cost for the operation. The 2018 USDA/NAHMS Health and Management Practices on U.S. Dairy Operations reported that the average cow removal rate in the Northeastern U.S. was 31.4 percent plus a 6.2 percent cow death rate for a total of 37.6 percent cows permanently removed from herds per year. The first half of this web meeting includes an example dialog between land/farm owner and renter as they negotiate the specific details of a lease agreement, highlighting important resources, tools and considerations to inform a resilient and robust agreement that serves both parties. The second half of the webinar is a discussion of specific leasing topics. 

Nutrient Management Training

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Nutrient and Pest Management Program is offering virtual training for farmers interested in writing their own nutrient management plans. This training will provide both the basics of nutrient management and an introduction to SnapPlus. Please register online at least three days in advance of the training date you plan to attend.

Presentations include the latest information on hybrid/variety performance, an analysis and discussion of last year's growing season, and updated recommendations for field crop production. CEUs will be offered in Crop Management for Certified Crop Advisers. There are two sessions to choose from, both sessions will present the same information. Private Pesticide Applicator In-Person Test Session

Fond du Lac County is offering in-person exam sessions for those who choose to complete the training online or the self-study option. Exams are held at the UWO Fond du Lac Campus on the second Tuesday of the month from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. Seating is limited. Available dates are January 11, February 8, and April 12.
