Wisconsin Soybean & Corn Disease Update

It has been a while since I posted a corn and soybean disease update for Wisconsin in 2021, and that is because it has been reasonably quiet in the disease world up to this point. However, recent scouting and incoming reports indicate that this could change a bit as we move into August. Let’s take a look at what has happened so far this season and what to keep an eye out for over the next month or so. Continue Reading

Pricing Corn Silage

Grain producers and dairymen annually debate the question, “What is corn silage worth this year?” Corn grain yields can be all over the board due to management and environmental effects. With variability in corn maturity and quality comes variability in price. Most farmers want a pricing method that’s simple yet justifiable.

Difficult Decisions in Grain Marketing

Grain and oilseed prices have continued to rise since January 2021, with the December 2021 corn futures price reaching $6.36/bu. in May 2021 (up $2.06/bu. from January 2021), and November 2021 soybean futures prices reaching $14.60/bu. in June 2021 (up $3.48/bu. from January 2021).
Currently, prices remain near the highest in seven years and if prices continue to follow the pattern like 2012, the 2021 December corn futures could reach as high as $7.75/bu. by end of August 2021 and November soybeans could see $17.00/bu.

Corn Silage Pricing App

UW-Madison Extension has developed a Smartphone app to provide a simple way to help estimate the market value of corn silage. The app includes links to current corn and hay market prices and allows buyers and sellers to enter their own yield estimates and harvest costs. The difference in values of soil nutrients removed when harvesting silage versus corn for grain is also calculated helping sellers fine-tune their standing value per acre.
