SCCOOS is monitoring an ongoing Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) in the Southern California region, and our office has developed a two-page informational poster to explain the science of HABs and HAB observing. The poster has been shared widely within our service region.
- New HAB Bulletin: Feb 2024 - Dec 2025

SCCOOS has released a report of CA HAB Conditions for December 2024 through February 2025, including a summary of the initial data from the onset of the ongoing HAB that began in late February. This latest edition includes a comprehensive summary of model outputs, real-time observations, preliminary stranding numbers, and public health/seafood advisories to keep our region informed about HAB activity along the California coast.

The California Department of Public Health has issued a set of Shellfish Harvesting Advisories for Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego counties due to the risk of illness from consuming sport-harvested mussels, clams, scallops, and oysters in these areas.
