|
| | Hello, friends, and welcome back to The Green Room.
This week we step into a moment of celebration and reflection. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, a band whose soundtrack has echoed through this region for more than five decades, brings their Curtain Call concert series to Hammons Hall. Last night, they performed with the Springfield Symphony, and tonight’s Generations concert brings local musicians together to say thank you to the Daredevils for the inspiration they’ve given over the years. This opening set features collaborations and reimagined B-sides from the OMD catalog. Saturday night’s Evening With performance will be an intimate farewell to life on the road, a homecoming, and a passing of the torch for Ozarks music.
And just as roots run deep in the Daredevils’ story, so does innovation in the work of Springfield’s own Molly Healey. Her new album, With the Wind: An Orchestral Dance Music Suite, pairs sweeping strings and pulsing beats to create a sound that is reaching toward something entirely new. It’s a record built from the familiar and the unexpected, offering listeners a musical leap that reminds us why we keep listening.
Here’s your backstage pass, friend. The stories this week are about where we come from, where we go, and what we leave behind. The amps are buzzing, and the glow from the stage light spills just beyond The Green Room door. Come on in.

If you ever study philosophy, you might have the pleasure to take a course in “aesthetics.”
That’s a fancy way of saying art.
I took Philosophy of Aesthetics many years ago and determined, at the point I needed to present a thesis paper actually articulating “what is art?,” that a 22-year-old man in a 300-level state university course was unlikely to solve a question with a solid 2000 years under its belt.
And so goes punk rock.
Punk is as “easily” definable as art is: you point at something, you declare it to be, and so it is. But is it? Both have distinguishing notions, characteristics, and are so observably what they are that you can just as often, with the same confidence, immediately declare something to NOT be that.
It’s difficult. It’s stupid. And, frankly, it misses the point.
Art is art. Punk is punk.
And Cold Water Kills is DEFINITELY punk.
I have not had the pleasure of seeing them live. I will twice today.
I have only heard two of their songs. One hopes I will at least double that today.
But, prior to being our guests this fine Friday for Studio Live (at NOON! On KSMU!) and Studio Live Social Hour (at 6:00 p.m. at BrewCo!) they were simply a band that had submitted a couple of songs to the station. I listened to them, and fell in love with them immediately, and played them on Local Radar - because they were SO “punk.” Punk can sound a lot of different ways, but it’s so obvious when it IS. And Cold Water Kills IS.
We don’t have a song for you this week, because Cold Water Kills is so punk they don’t even have tracks on the internet (yet). So, check them out on Studio Live today at noon! Or, come check them out from 6:00-8:00 p.m. tonight at BrewCo! Or catch a track after that on Local Radar! Be bold. Do it all. Keep it punk. We’ll see you next week!
