Meet the ILI 2017 T.I.M.E. Challenge Fellows

The Institute for Local Innovation, Inc (ILI) is excited to announce the Inaugural 2017 Class of ILI TIME Challenge Fellows.

HIGH SCORES

Students from Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University answered the call and rose to the ILI TIME Challenge: Ideation on how to move NASA technology to the Marketplace. These students range from freshman to those at the MBA level of studies. These next generation leaders proposed uses for NASA technology.
Morgan Kelley
4th year 5 year MBA Major
Hampton University

"Aeternal Rebar"

Congratuations to Morgan for the top score for her idea and presentation on her approach to bring the NASA Liquid Coating for Corrosion Prevention in Rebar to market.
She was able to explain the complexity of metal corrosion in layperson terms and the cost and safety imacts it can have on concrete in buildings, bridges and other infrastructure.
Morgan made a compeling business case for the size of the market, the need for the use of this NASA technology along with examples and estimated costs for implementation.

Team "Riverside Water Purification" -

Congratuations to this team of freshmen from Morehouse College & Clark Atlanta University on their idea "Riverside Water Purification." Utilizing NASA water purification technology to address challenge of fresh water in island nations especially following disaters. It was great to see these dynamic freshman go toe-to-toe with upper classmen and MBA students. At the time of this release, one of the Fellows from Hampton, who also proposed to use this technology, reached out to this team to discuss working together.

Robo-Glove:
"The Renaissance of Rehabilitation"

Congratulations to Matthew for his creative and practical approach to put the Robo-Glove NASA technology to use in medical-rehabilitation applications. He did a great job identifying the size of the challenges to lost productivity due to hand injuries in the workplace as well those caused by accidents and strokes. Matthew made a compelling case for use of the technology as a physical therapy device with tech enhancements that would make the glove adapt and adjust to the current and future state of the users hand(s).

NASA PRESS RELEASE

NASA Goddard Announces Agreement with Institute for Local Innovations, Inc.
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) in Greenbelt, Md. has announced the signing of a five year Space Act Agreement with the Louisiana based Institute for Local Innovations, Inc. (ILI).
Piloted by NASA Goddard, the Agreement will allow ILI to promote NASA technologies and capabilities to small businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as the departments of business, engineering, and science, at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), and Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), in an effort to stimulate economic growth in certain U.S. regions (Read the Full Press Release).

Additional selected NASA Technology

Other HBCU students selected the techologies below and came up with creative ideas on how to bring them to the marketplace.  Mission driven students looked at ways to improve the human condition (watch student tech talk video below). Students provided ideas on how to address health and medical conditions, support for small farmers, sustainable energy production, clean water, and disaster recovery.
With the assistance of the staff from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Technology Transfer Office, we at the Institute for Local Innovations and Liquid Studios, along with our partners and contributors, are humbled to have the opportunity to support future generations of entreprenurial leaders. It is our goal to help make these ILI 2017 T.I.ME Challenge Fellows as successful as possible.
