NET Organoids Gain Attention

An international gathering of leading NET clinicians and researchers in March gave top recognition to an active NETRF-funded research study to develop organoids or mini-organs in the laboratory. NETRF granted an Accelerator Award to the Hans Clevers' Lab at Hubrecht Institute, Netherlands, to develop NET organoids to expand the field’s preclinical NET research tools. An organoid is a laboratory replica of tumor cells that researchers can study to understand the nature of neuroendocrine cancer and to test new treatments  Two years later, the lab's progress is attracting attention and hope. (MORE)

Teen Takes on NETs

A high school senior from Michigan takes action following her neuroendocrine cancer diagnosis. Dismayed by the delays in her diagnosis, Lilly set out to make a difference by raising money for NET research. She designed, produced, and sold zebra stickers at school To make her zebra as uncommon as she was, Lilly gave her zebra some swaggera pink mohawk mane—then followed suit by coloring her own hair pink as well. Celebrating Progress in NET Research Funding

The Spark Hope campaign has been our focus since July 2018. Every gift we receive is matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling the impact of each investment. Spark Hope is fueled by a challenge grant generously given by the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation, which has agreed to match all gifts up to $5 million to raise a total of $10 million for NET research. (MORE)

Current Treatment for Lung NETs

About one in four NETs occurs in the lungs. Beyond surgery, leading professional associations are not aligned on treatment approaches. As part of a recent patient and caregiver conference, NETRF held in collaboration with The Tisch Cancer Institute Mount Sinai, we took a closer look at the different types of lung NETs, effective treatment strategies, and the prognosis for typical lung carcinoids.

First ENETS Center of  Excellence in the U.S.

The European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) has named University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center as the first U.S. NET Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes centers that meet stringent qualitative and quantitative quality standards.

Confusion Continues

Lack of awareness about pancreatic cancer vs. pancreatic NET

Jeopardy host Alex Trebek's announcement of his pancreatic cancer diagnosis has put cancers of this organ in the spotlight. Unfortunately, multiple news outlets, including network news programs (above screenshot from NBC Nightly News), incorrectly included pancreatic NET patients, such as Aretha Franklin and Steve Jobs, in lists of those whose lives were lost to pancreatic cancer. Take a minute now to learn more about the differences between the two cancers and help educate others. (MORE)
