Director’s Updates to Parents/Guardians: COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus)

The Toronto District School Board is committed to keeping all parents/guardians updated on the impact to schools and education with regard to the current health crisis – COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus). Below are the recent updates from Director of Education John Malloy:

Online Learning Resources for Students – Ministry of Education and TDSB

The Ministry of Education has launched a new website to help students in Grades K – 12 learn at home. The website, www.ontario.ca/learnathome, provides students with supplementary learning resources to practice math and literary skills during the closure of all public schools.

The TDSB has also launched online learning resources for students. This site supports the Ministry of Education's Learn at Home initiative and includes a variety of resources that cover a range of grades and subjects.

It’s important to note that these online resources are not mandatory or graded and are meant for families to use as optional resources to support independent learning while students are at home.

TDSB Playgrounds and Park Amenities Closed

On Wednesday, March 25, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health announced the closure of a number of city amenities including all city-owned playgrounds, sports fields, and basketball and tennis courts to limit public congregation and reduce the spread of COVID-19. All Toronto schools have been called on to do the same.

For that reason, the TDSB has closed all playgrounds and other amenities, including sports fields and basketball and tennis courts, on school board property until further notice.

ETFO Tentative Agreement

The Ontario Public School Boards' Association (OPSBA) and the Government of Ontario have reached a tentative agreement with the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) for both teachers and education workers. The details of the agreement remain confidential until ratified by all parties. ETFO has suspended all job action while awaiting ratification of the deal.

Next Board Meeting

During the closure of all public schools, the Government of Ontario is allowing school boards to meet virtually. The next scheduled Regular Board Meeting is on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.
