How many years have you been at Brebeuf and in what capacities?
This is my second year year here at Brebeuf, but it’s my 22nd year as a math teacher.  I teach Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry.
What's your favorite thing about the role you play at Brebeuf?
I absolutely love math, so any time I’m getting to work math problems, I’m happy.  However, the reason I became a teacher is because I love helping people.  So, any time I get to help students, I’m ecstatic.
What makes Brebeuf different from other area high schools?
Well, I’ve never taught at (or attended) another area high school, so I’m not sure if I can accurately answer this question.  But, I must say that school is school no matter where I’ve been. What sets Brebeuf apart from the rest for me, though, is the quality of my math colleagues here in the math office and the amount of time during the day available for me to help my students.  Also, I really appreciate the school’s dedication to social justice and diversity.
Describe a memorable moment from your time at Brebeuf.
Even though I love teaching, I think that my most memorable moments here at Brebeuf have involved time spent with my fellow math teachers. I’ve never worked with such wonderful people; the math department members are professional, extremely knowledgeable, concerned about their students, and (what might be surprising to some) hilarious.  It’s wonderful getting to share an office with them;  I learn so much from them every day, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I “steal” from them constantly.  I love listening to the different ways they explain material, and whenever I hear an explanation that’s better than what I would have said, I file it away to use it later. Plus, they keep me sane with their senses of humor.  We laugh all day long, and I appreciate them more than they probably know.
If one of your friends was considering sending their child to Brebeuf, what would you tell them?
Actually, I do have a friend who is considering sending her daughter here, and we have spent many hours at the pool during the summer talking about how Brebeuf is the place for her.  I can’t imagine a school where her teachers would care more about her daughter’s academic and social well-being than Brebeuf.
What's something that challenges you, and how do you navigate that challenge?
I am hands-down the most unorganized person in the math office. I don’t know that I’d say that I actually navigate that challengeI just basically have learned to live with it.  Maybe one of these days I’ll manage to make some progress in that area of my life.  I know that my husband sure would appreciate it if I did.
Who inspires you?
My daddy is my heroalways has been, and always will be.
What do you like to do in your spare time, when not working at Brebeuf?
My husband and I are both sports nuts, so we love to watch a good ballgame every chance we get.  The two of us go out to eat a lot, too, because I’m a horrible cook and we just enjoy eating out.  (Unfortunately, that little hobby of ours has caused me to gain 60 pounds since we got married in 2010, so I might be better off investing in some cooking lessons.)  We also love to travel--even though we usually only have time for quick weekend jaunts.  And, I love to hang out with the two greatest stepdaughters (Chloe and Sadie) the world has ever known any chance I get.
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know…
I’m pretty much an open book once you get to know me, so there’s not a lot people don’t know about me. But, we were Memphis Grizzlies season ticket holders when we lived in Memphis, so we’ll be at Bankers Life in a few days rooting on the Grizz.  Grit & Grind!

Support Brebeuf Jesuit Class of 2013 Alumna Carly O'Donnell and her Work with Global Medical Brigades

Carly O’Donnell '13, who is a current senior studying Neuroscience at Indiana University in Bloomington, is spearheading an effort as the president of Global Medical Brigades (GMB) to bring a vision screening station to a clinic in Nicaragua.
Global Medical Brigades (GMB) is a student-led organization with the mission of improving the access and quality of basic healthcare in countries like Panama, Ghana, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Each year, volunteers spend five days in a rural community where they set up and help run a clinic that offers access to physician consultations, dental care, medications and more to people that would otherwise have limited or no access to healthcare.
As Carly prepares to lead the group heading to work on adding the vision screening station, she is looking for help from the Brebeuf Jesuit community to fill an important need.  In order to accomplish their goals, Carly and her group need to collect old prescription, reading, and sun glasses.
All families that are able to assist are asked to please drop their glasses in the community service office by March 1. For more information including other ways you can help, please contact Carly at cmodonne@indiana.edu.
A note from Carly:
"Thank you in advance on behalf of myself, my organization, and the deserving people that will give new life to your old glasses. I look forward to seeing our community come together to make better vision a reality for those less fortunate than ourselves!"

Summer Integrated Chemistry/Physics (ICP) Course

This summer, Brebeuf Jesuit will be offering an Integrated Chemistry/Physics (ICP) course. This course is recommended for students needing or desiring additional preparation for either Chemistry I or Physics I at Brebeuf.
ICP serves as an introductory course for both Chemistry and Physics moving at a pace that allows for greater reflection and remediation.  Students completing the course often feel more confident about their work in future science classes. By taking ICP in the summer, students can stay on the most common science progression, taking Chemistry as sophomores and possibly Physics as juniors.
This summer option could benefit the following students:
  • Freshman currently recommended for ICP during sophomore year.
  • Freshman challenged by Algebra I (typically earning a C+ or lower in Algebra I) and enrolled in Chemistry during sophomore year.
Course: Integrated Chemistry/Physics (ICP)
Dates: June 12-30, 2017 and July 10-28, 2017 (Both Summer Sessions)
Time: 7:30-11:30 a.m.
If you have questions about this course or whether this option would benefit your student, please contact your student’s Academic Counselor or the ICP Instructor Jason Rott at jrott@brebeuf.org.

All-School Diversity Dialogue on American Muslims

Thursday, February 23, 8:25 a.m.
Early in this semester, senior Umayr Shaikh and the Muslim Student Association began speaking with Brebeuf Jesuit administration about the possibility of an all-school diversity dialogue to educate students and encourage dialogue around the topic of American Muslims. These thoughtful discussions have resulted in a event to meet the need for this dialogue at this time.
The format of the dialogue will include:
  • Panel of three to four students and two outside adult experts.
  • Presentation topics are based at least in part on questions that students pre-submit through their religious studies classes
  • Anticipated topics the students have discussed include:
    • Experience of American Muslims with current political situation in U.S.
    • Ways that the history of Islam has brought us to the present moment
    • Misconceptions about the history of Islam
    • Addressing stereotypes particularly around Muslim women.
Open mics will be available for questions and comments from students.
