UNO CLACS Maya Language Program Launches in Guatemala

The UNO Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) completed its first Kaqchikel Maya Summer Language Program this July. Professor Robert E. Barrios and five students participated in the intensive Mayan language and culture course with Kaqchikel linguist Ambrocia Ixnal Cuma de Chavez in Ciudad Vieja, Guatemala.

Associate professor Dr. Zarus Watson was awarded the American Counseling Association's Presidential Citation for 2023 at their March conference. The honor was given for Watson's "outstanding service to the counseling profession; illuminating multicultural and diversity issues; and serving as a counselor education, mentor and advocate."

Professor John Gery's Summer with Ezra Pound

UNO research professor of English John R.O. Gery also serves as academic director for the Ezra Pound Center for Literature at Brunnenburg. This summer, his work on Ezra Pound took him from Idaho to Scotland.

Center Austria opened its doors to a new group of students from the University of Innsbruck. Cross-cultural exchanges are enriching but hard at the same time — dorm rooms to be furnished, class schedules finalized and a new campus navigated. When all of this happens during a heat wave, a cool libation and some comfort food on the National Bratwurst Day were a nice reward.

Next January, associate professor Carolyn Hembree's third poetry book, "For Today," will be published by Louisiana State University Press in Ava Leavell Haymon's Barataria Poetry series. She also has poems forthcoming in several publications.

Assistant professor Robin Werner has an article forthcoming that she presented at the Popular Culture Association last spring: "Privilege and Place: Teaching Anne Rice's 'Interview with the Vampire' to Twenty-First Century New Orleanians." The article will be published in "Teaching with Vampires" by Melissa Anyiwo.

Dr. Elizabeth Jeffers published an article in the journal "Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis" entitled, "The Plantation 'All Charter' Model and the Long Durée of Resistance for Black Public High Schools in New Orleans."

Philosophy professor Dr. Frank Schalow has a new article published: "Freedom and the Linguistic Turn in Kant's 'Critique of Judgement'," in "Philosophy, Freedom, Language and their Others: Contemporary Legacies of German Idealism," published in 2023.

Will Wainwright '11 was named the new president of Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. He is Southeastern's 15th president and succeeds Dr. John L. Crain, who held the position for 14 years.
