Reverend Corey J. Sanderson recently participated in the Miller Center’s antisemitism training for Christian clergy, operated in coordination with the Newton Interfaith Leaders Association and funded by Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Rabbi Or Rose invited Rev. Sanderson to share a reflection on this experience:

Have you ever overheard a conversation in which someone speaking didn’t have their story straight? You realize they are missing some important details, valued perspectives, or essential understandings. You wonder, “Should I interrupt and say something, or should I mind my own business?” Sometimes helping people get their story straight isn’t a big deal. When wildfires devastated neighborhoods in Los Angeles last year, rabbis found themselves facing questions that extended well beyond emergency response. While congregants needed food, shelter, and practical support, they also needed to gather again as a community, make sense of loss, and imagine what it would mean to heal. As Director of Spiritual Activism and Education at Dayenu: A Jewish Call to Climate Action, Rabbi Laura Bellows `18 works at the intersection of Jewish wisdom and climate action. When a rabbi in Southern California reached out after the fires asking whether Dayenu had resources to help her community navigate the aftermath of devastation, Bellows and her colleagues identified a gap that needed filling.

We have traveled nearly the full arc of Elul. The new year is close now, the sweetness of Rosh Hashanah and the soul realignment of Yom Kippur just ahead. For weeks, we have been turning toward what is to come, accompanied by the daily sounding of the shofar. Soon that sound will usher us across the threshold. The spiritual practice that has oriented us throughout this season, and will carry us into the Days of Awe, is teshuvah: return. We often conceive of return in this season as a retracing of our steps to encounter some earlier, better, purer version of ourselves. Yet the living world teaches there is no such purity. There is no organism untouched by its environment, no body made only of itself.
