Owl Spotlight
We are so proud of all of our Academy scholars. This week we want to shout out one of our WAHS superstars, Ava Castro-DeVarona. Her senior year has been a busy one! Not only is she our ASB President, but she's Captain of the Varsity Volleyball Team, a National Honor Society member, and a Link Crew Leader, helping to mentor and support freshmen during their first year of high school. This past year, she also served as the 75th Youth Governor of California (ALL of California) through the YMCA's Youth & Government program, which she has participated in for the last four years. Ava is a phenomenal leader, and while we will miss her when she graduates this June, we are eager to see all she is destined to accomplish.

In the Classroom
We just wrapped up our first semester, and our Academy scholars were studying hard, whether gathering in our Teen Room on campus or at the coffee place down the street. At WISH, our finals aren't simply exams. With WAHS's focus on project-based learning, our students are asked to think critically and go deeper with their responses. From our BioMedical students presenting on vaccine development to our Engineering pathway students creating survival kits and Pom Pom launchers, many cool things were happening on campus! Our Civics/Liberal Arts scholars completed research and engaged in debates on college admission and affirmative action, took a side, and debated one another. Students in the Visual and Performing Arts pathway showcased their acting and vocal skills and costume designs for their end-of-semester projects.

Good Times
Before Winter Break, our WAHS musicians flashed back to a groovy era of disco, funk, soul, and more at their Back to the 70's music show, held at LMU. With highlights like the Guitar Ensemble playing "Stairway to Heaven," the Contemporary Band crushing "Heart of Glass," and beautiful solos of Vienna and Stuck in the Middle, it was an incredibly entertaining night of music showcasing the immense talents of our Academy students.

Sports Superstars
Mia Bagnara has been on the WISH Academy Girls' Varsity Volleyball Team since her freshman year. Now a senior, Mia is a captain of her team and the starting setter, leading her team to a first-place finish in the Ocean League for the fourth consecutive year. She was nominated to the 2022 1st Team All-League for CIF DIII All City, 2022 1st Ocean League Team, and the 2022 Girls LAVCA Senior All-Academic Team with a 3.83 GPA. She competed on WISH Academy’s inaugural Beach Volleyball team last spring and will compete again this year. She is a superstar, and with many college acceptances already, we are thrilled to see her soar!

Hoots Student "I have really enjoyed the friendships I’ve built and the close connections with teachers. As a soccer player, I have helped lead and grow our team, and I enjoy my teammates! As an Engineering pathway student, I’m thrilled to have worked with our CubeSAT competition team to earn a winning spot in the NASA TechRise competition two years in a row."
--Nathan S., WAHS 11th-Grade Student
Family "Despite the relatively young 'age' of WISH Academy, my children (9th and 11th grade) are thriving. They are academically challenged in their coursework and have a wide variety of activities and clubs that they are taking advantage of and enjoying, including but not limited to Academic Decathlon, CubeSAT, ASB (Student Council), Yearbook, A/V Club, AP courses, and instrumental music programming/experiences. As a parent, I appreciate the wide variety of academic and extra-curricular programming opportunities that are provided to the students and parents. We have had some excellent presentations on college readiness applicable to all high school levels and focused on the application process, structuring your time in high school, and even making the most of your summer months to show great things to colleges and universities. WISH Academy may be a smaller school, but there is no denying the giant impact they have on the students and families in the way that they encourage and empower students to grow in areas of education, enrichment, compassion, and community. We feel very fortunate to be a part of this amazing school!" -- Jana Koppula, WAHS parent
Faculty "I love WISH Academy because we really get to know each of our students, which makes a HUGE difference." --Ms. Zendajas, WAHS Assistant Principal
