Dear Partner in Ministry,
In our worship services, we often explore and interact with timeless, expansive things. Scriptures passed down to us from past millennia. Hymns ringing through from centuries ago. The very nature of worship itself is a contemplation of the mysteries of God, grace, and our own place in it all. This Sunday our worship will include a piece of choral music by Ola Gjeilo (YAY-lo) called “Sunrise Mass.” Gjeilo is a Norwegian-American composer whose music draws as freely from cinematic soundscapes as from the classical choral tradition. Sunrise Mass is in four movements. The texts that are sung by the choir come from the traditional Latin texts that have been used in Christian worship for centuries. But Gjeilo sets these texts to expansive, cinematic choral and string writing, and gives each of the four movements a title that isn’t derived from the Latin text. These titles “The Spheres,” “Sunrise,” “The City,” “Identity” give some idea of the story arch that the composer is hoping to convey through the music.

We used these titles to guide us in planning our worship service this week. The service will include scripture readings, from throughout the Bible, and select poetry, moving us from the expanse of the cosmos to our identities as children of God and our place in the world around us.
