“Cloud” Computing: Isabella Caffarelli Shares Insights
from her Department of Energy Internship
Henric Krawczynski, the Wilfred R. and Ann Lee Konneker Distinguished Professor in Physics and MCSS fellow, helped Isabella Caffarelli start a project developing a neural network model to reconstruct the X-ray light curves from a black hole. Her work on the ongoing project helped the network recognize patterns within the emissions near accretion disks around the black hole.

Rubin First Look Watch Party
Over the summer, MCSS and the Department of Physics sponsored an event in Crow Hall to view the unveiling of the first spectacular images from the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The event, streamed live on YouTube, was hosted by WashU Physics Visiting Research Scholar, Andrés A. Plazas Malagón, and Tansu Daylan.
Recently, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory presented WashU with a Certificate of Participation recognizing our "active involvement and valuable contribution to the success" of the event.
