You’ve seen the art at Stanford Redwood City (SRWC) a hundred times, but have you really met it? We talked with Danielle Wohl, who helped build our collection.

What were the initial discussions around art when the campus opened in 2019?

Art was seen as an important aspect of shaping the identity of the Redwood City campus. The conversations were around supporting the interior architecture as well as creating an environment that is welcoming, inspiring, and reflective of Stanford’s values. 

How did you ensure the art represented a diverse range of perspectives?

We sought artists whose varying experiences, practices, and perspectives would enrich the art collection and the experience for those on the campus. By picking from both local and international artists of different experience levels and across a wide spectrum of media, we ensured diversity of voices. 

Were certain pieces chosen to complement the architecture or natural surroundings?

Yes, definitely. Colors, scale, and materials (that were used in the art) were often chosen to harmonize with natural light, landscape elements, or architectural details. So, the art turned into a natural extension of its surroundings, rather than an addition. Each custom-designed, hand-painted mural, of which there are 12, was the result of a thoughtful process, each driven by the artist’s vision and guided by a collaborative approach with Redwood City leadership.

Can you talk about Amos Goldbaum's piece on the first floor in Cardinal Hall?

Amos' first mural, Campus to Campus I, sits in the sixth floor of Cardinal Hall and interconnected Redwood City and Stanford campus. This was so well-received that we had him come back to create Campus to Campus II, which highlights the connection between the Stanford and Redwood City campuses. By visually interconnecting both locations, the work strengthens the reality that Redwood City is an integral part of Stanford’s larger community. 

How can everyone continue to interact with or contribute to the campus' art story?

Art has a natural fluidity—it reveals new meanings and each viewing can bring a fresh perspective. The presence of beautiful, thought-provoking artwork transforms the campus into more than just a workplace; it becomes a space of continuous engagement and renewal. In embracing art, the University embraces its community. The result is a show respect, care, and belief in the role of creativity in daily life.

560 Fremont touchdown space temporarily offline

SRWC touchdown desks at 560 Fremont on the Stanford campus will be offline between Thursday, October 9 and Tuesday, October 14. Four desks will be back online by Wednesday, October 15 and can be booked using Cardinal Flex (select 'SU SRWC Touchdown'). 

To book a space at 560 Fremont when the desks are offline, use meeting rooms Eave (room 317), Frieze (room 311), and Ziggurat (room 315), or find a space in the plaza/water points.

Thank Our Veterans

Show your appreciation by picking up a card in front of Cardinal Café, penning a message of thanks using the supplies provided. These cards will be sent to the VA hospital in Menlo Park.

Día de los Muertos honors the memories of loved ones who have passed. At Stanford Redwood City, we mark this tradition with an ofrenda adorned with marigolds, photos, and favorite foods of departed loved ones from October 27 - October 31.

Contribute by giving us photos and names of the departed (including pets) via email (srwc_events@stanford.edu) or drop it off at the Cardinal Hall lobby by Friday, October 25.

SRWC photography and videography policies

Staff or other SRWC community members who require photography of the campus for events or department-related work must notify the Operations team at least 48 hours before the event. This will ensure a smoother experience on the day of the shoot.
