Wordplay 2024 Success!

We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped make Wordplay 2024 such a success.

With your support, we were able to raise nearly $40,000 with over 40 teams, over $6,000 in donated raffle items, and nearly 200 audience tickets. This was our most successful post-pandemic Wordplay, and we couldn't have done it without you. Now, who is counting down for next year!

Thank you, Heather!

Community Engagement Coordinator Heather Tebbenhoff left Literacy Volunteers at the start of this month to pursue a full-time management position. Heather has been a big part of the success of Literacy Volunteers, and we are grateful for all that she has done. Every one of us wishes her well.

If you would like to send well-wishes or a goodbye, please use this Google Form rather than email her. This will allow her to peruse the responses when she's able.

We know that we cannot replace Heather and all of the amazing work that she has done; however, we do want to let you know who to reach out to if you have any questions.

If you have program questions, including textbook or technology questions with Skedda or Zoom, please reach out to Steven.
If you have organizational questions, please reach out to Ellen.
If you have communications or book club questions, please reach out to Rebecca.
If you have citizenship questions, please reach out to Catherine

Volunteer Training Opportunities

We can always use more volunteer tutors!
Literacy Volunteers would not run without our volunteer tutors (it's part of our name, after all), and we still have spots available in our upcoming training sessions. If you know of anyone who is interested in signing up, please encourage them to do so. We are always happy to answer any questions people might have, too. Just reach out at (434) 977-3838 or by email.

LVCA in the Community

Wordplay season brought much of our attention to the game, but our staff members continued to work in the larger community. Here are a few of the media appearances and events that took place:
  • Albemarle Magazine featured the history of Wordplay and volunteer game designer, Debra Weiss, in their April/May issue.
  • Debra Weiss stopped by WVIR's Community Conversations to chat about Wordplay
  • Community Engagement Coordinator Heather Tebbenhoff spoke to The Daily Progress's Emily Hemphill about the game. You can read the feature here or without the paywall here
  • Communications Coordinator Rebecca Thomas finished her participation in the inaugural cohort of the Digital Resilience in the American Workforce training and looks forward to bringing this to Virginia. You can learn more about this federal initiative here
  • Program Manager Steven Reid presented at the Literacy for Life conference. Additionally, he conducted an all-day train-the-trainer session for Suffolk Literacy Council as they rebuild their literacy organization.
If there is an event or outreach opportunity that you think LVCA or a staff member would be a good fit for, please reach out to Rebecca.
