It was 8 weeks ago yesterday that Charly Butcher suddenly died. Mr. Butcher hosted mornings at Federated Media's N-T/WOWO (1190am, Fort Wayne) and FM translator W298BJ (107.5fm, Fort Wayne).
For the past several weeks, Mike Wilson hosted "Fort Wayne's Morning News" as "the morning host, pro tem." Nearly a decade ago, Mr. Wilson worked in the WOWO newsroom and was News Director, before leaving to join Randy Michaels' all-news 101.1fm in Chicago. ("FM News 101.1").
Local ABC affiliate WPTA-TV (Channel 21, Fort Wayne) did a story on Mr. Wilson returning to WOWO, and Mr. Wilson also announced that he will donate his WOWO salary to "Penny Pitch"; the community non-profit organization that's affiliated with WOWO. Here's the story from reporter Kaitlyn Kendall at "ABC21."

Former WFYI (90.1fm, Indianapolis) broadcaster Jay Zochowski died on Monday morning, at the far too young age of 60. Mr. Zochowski joined in 1987 when the station was still WIAN, and owned by the Indianapolis Public Schools. In 1988, Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Broadcasting became the owners of 90.1fm, and that's when WIAN became WFYI. Mr. Zochowski served as Operations Manager for years, and also both hosted and produced "Nothin' But the Blues," a nationally syndicated blues show.
Mr. Zochowski was a paraplegic, the victim of a shooting when he was a teen, living in Texas. The shooting severed his spinal cord.
Michael Atwood (another former WFYI broadcaster) will lead Jay's memorial service on Sunday, October 14 at 2:00pm at the Gothic Chapel located at Crown Hill Cemetery, 700 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm.
Donations may be made to WFYI. Here's the complete obituary.

Earlier this year, the FCC held what's called a settlement window for FM translators. These FM translator applications had to pair themselves with an AM station. The settlement window specifically addressed competing applications that were on or near the same frequency. These settlements could be made technically (by the applicants agreeing to move to different frequencies) or financially (one owner pays another owner to drop their application). Now that the settlement window closed, it's time for some of those FM translators to file their FCC "long-form" application, which will detail the technical parameters of their proposed FM translator. Those applications that couldn't be resolved will later go to auction.
As for the FCC "long form" application time window, that began a week ago (October 4) and owners have until November 5 to file. In our territory, the only translator is on 107.9fm, licensed to Henderson, and Henson Media of Henderson County, LLC filed the FM translator application as a proposed simulcast of Classic Hits/WSON (860am, Henderson, Kentucky).
