After graduate school where he obtained his Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Luther spent the next several years in an executive role in the field of Human Resources and Organizational Development. Luther started his entrepreneurial career when he founded Lumenate, an outdoor architectural/Landscape lighting and specialty lighting company in 2013. After establishing Lumenate with its core leadership team, Luther shifted his focus and in 2019, co-founded Mavien, a residential and commercial Audio-Video and automation company specializing in high-end integrated solutions for the home and office space.
When Luther isn’t bouncing between Lumenate and Mavien, he can be found spending any spare time with his wife and kids enjoying any activities that involve the outdoors.
What is a personal piece of advice (business advice/saying/quote) that you lean on and could pass on to others?
I love the Pareto Principle of 80/20. It holds true in all aspects of business. For example, 20% of my customers provide 80% of my revenue. Another example is that 20% of my clients drive 80% of my headaches. A third example is 80% of my expenses can be classified in 20% of my P&L. With this in mind, it helps me to remember to focus in on what really matters and not to get lost in the areas that have little to no impact on the business.
Best business book you’ve ever read?
I loved Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. I personally find when asking the question “Why”, it immediately takes the conversation to the next level.
One misstep you took in your business that you could caution others about? I allowed Fear, especially early on, to drive my decisions or lack of. Once I finally took the training wheels off an initiative, real growth began to occur.
How to you de-stress after a particularly hard day?
Playing any backyard sport that my son wants to play. Basketball is currently our favorite.
What’s something about you that would surprise everyone reading this?
I married my oldest Daughter’s third grade teacher! On the last day of my daughter’s school, I asked my wife out and she reluctantly said yes. The rest is history! She is still my kids favorite teacher!
What part of EO are you most looking forward to?
Social connections with likeminded entrepreneurs!
Any exciting plans for 2022?
My oldest daughter is getting married on April 22nd of this year. I’m going to be a trainwreck. 😊
