| A Message from the Consul General
On April 17-19, I had the honor of welcoming Prime Minister Abe in Palm Beach for the second time. The Prime Minister’s meeting with President Trump was very positive, reaffirming a united position on North Korea and full commitment to the US-Japan Alliance as well as launching new ministerial talks for free, fair and reciprocal trade deals.
(cf. details on the Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting).
I had the pleasure of accompanying Akie Abe, the First Lady, on her visit to Loggers' Run Middle School in Boca Raton. Mrs. Abe was warmly greeted by the school and even participated in a culinary class, making sushi with the students. In this connection, I am extremely pleased that Palm Beach County will fund Japanese language education at the Middle School starting this August.
Mrs. Abe also met former participants of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. It was encouraging how the former JETs continue to be engaged with Japan.
Also in April, Gero City in Gifu Prefecture celebrated the 25th anniversary of exchange with its sister city Pensacola. Pensacola Mayor Hayward visited Japan to attend the ceremony hosted by Gero City Mayor Hattori. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all those who have contributed to continuing the relationship.
On April 12, I attended the inauguration of the new 13,000-square-foot Sky Lounge at Miami Tower. Sumitomo Corporation of Americas acquired the building in 2016 and renovated Sky Lounge as an innovative venue. I congratulate Sumitomo and thank them for their contribution to the local community.
On April 25, I joined MDC North Campus President Dr. Malou Harrison at the opening of “Dolls of Japan” Exhibition at Miami Dade College North Campus. The Japan Foundation selected 75 dolls in a diverse range of styles and from various regions. Even in Japan, I have never seen such an impressive collection of dolls. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see these dolls before June 1!
As for upcoming events, the Ichimura-Miami Japanese Garden will be holding their annual Spring Festival on May 13. Ikebana, taiko drumming, Japanese sword demonstrations, and authentic tea ceremonies will be offered. Hope you join us!
Finally, this is a great time of year to visit Japan as the weather is perfect – warm, but not nearly as hot as summer. It’s the perfect chance to see many flowers in bloom.
