Student Spotlight

Loves About Brebeuf
I love the community here at Brebeuf. Everyone here truly cares for one another and want to see you succeed. As a senior, I think it is really convenient how all the seniors’ lockers are on the same floor because it allows all of us to connect as a grade. I also love the freedom Brebeuf students get. PRTs are a great time for me to meet with a teacher or just catch up with my friends.
Favorite Class
My favorite class this year is Intro to Entrepreneurship with Mr. VanSlambrook. The class is very interesting and I have a lot of friends in that class with me. My favorite class of all time would have to be my U.S. History class with Mr. Mayer during my sophomore year. I love studying history because of how interesting I find it and Mr. Mayer made the class very enjoyable.
Future Plans
I plan on attending Denison University to study Economics and continue playing baseball. I also might minor in history as well.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Brebeuf Varsity Baseball
Random Facts
I am the youngest of five children. I have two older brothers in college, a sister who lives in Rhode Island, and another sister who lives in Michigan.
I love watching movies, especially 80’s films like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Back to the Future
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
My favorite show on Netflix would have to be How I Met Your Mother because of interesting the concept of the show is. I also love it because there are episodes that make you laugh out loud while others make you cry.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
There are so many places to choose from, but I would love to visit Santorini, Greece because of how beautiful the architecture and scenery looks. Touring the Eiffel Tower and the streets of Paris would also be amazing, and I would love to visit Florence, Italy again.
What are your plans for Thanksgiving?
My family is having everyone from my mom’s side over to my house to have Thanksgiving dinner together. I am excited because all of my siblings are coming and I don’t see them often.
What advice would you offer our Braves in the Class of 2021?
Don’t blink. I know it does not seem like it, but your senior year will be here before you know it. Your time here at Brebeuf is limited, so make the most out of it by connecting with everyone. Reach out to teachers when you need help and find friends that bring out the best in you. Lastly, do not fall behind! Freshman year grades matter!

The FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid - is the form all colleges ask students to file to determine what kind of financial assistance a student might be eligible for. The FAFSA opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible.  Families can start the process now by creating a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID - one for the student and one for a parent - at www.fafsa.gov. These IDs will remain the entire time the student is in college, so it’s important to keep track of them.

This series, co-sponsored by the Indy Notre Dame Club, honors Fr. Ted Hesburgh, the late iconic former president of the university.

As a champion of civil rights, scholarship and Catholic education, it is fitting that Fr. From the release:

“The ISTE Standards are refreshed every seven to 10 years to ensure they remain relevant and prepare students for the future, while also allowing schools, districts and states to have time to adopt, implement and show an impact on learning. As part of the refresh process, ISTE is working with a group of thought leaders in education to assist in the development of the latest standards. This group, called the ISTE Technical Working Group, includes administrators and educators both in K-12 and higher education to ensure that ISTE receives input and direction from a diverse group of stakeholders.”

Jen is the only Catholic educator and only private school educator on this committee. What an awesome opportunity!  Jen will return to Washington, D.C. to continue her work!

Emily Myers '18 Advocating for Hate Crime Legislation

Senior Emily Myers has started a petition encouraging others to advocate for hate crime laws in Indiana. Emily needs support to take her petition to the next level.

Please read her message below.

From Emily Myers '18:

"After participating in the fall play, The Laramie Project, and attending the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Washington, D.C. during the first week of November, I was inspired to take action and advocate for hate crime laws in Indiana, one of five states without hate crime legislation in the United States. Just over a week ago, I started a petition voicing my support for hate crime laws and encouraging others to advocate for hate crime laws in Indiana. Every time my petition receives a signature, an email is sent to local senators and representatives about hate crime laws.

I have reached out to the Matthew Shepard Foundation about my petition and they were incredibly excited about my advocacy. They sent out a media blast about my petition and it has now been signed by people all over the world, including Taiwan, Vietnam, Poland, Germany, Venezuela, and Ireland. Thanks to the support of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, my petition is currently in the top 15% on Change.org.

Next week, Brebeuf's Social Justice Club will be educating Religion classes on the importance of hate crime laws and ways to take action in our own community. I plan to meet with local senator, John Ruckelshaus,on the issue, and I will not stop advocating for these laws until they are passed in Indiana.

If you feel so inspired, I encourage you to sign my petition here, contact or meet with local senators and representatives, and educate those around you on hate crime laws.

Lastly, I would like to thank Brebeuf Jesuit for giving me the opportunity to spread awareness on this issue and encouraging me to combat injustices." - Emily Myers '18

Help for the Holidays Toy Drive

Brebeuf Jesuit's "Help for the Holidays" toy drive is wrapping up soon. We are collecting toys for the Christmas Store at the Catholic Charities Crisis Office. More than 700 needy families will "shop" for Christmas gifts and clothing for their children.

We need your support! Please make sure your student brings in his/her toy by Tuesday, November 28. This is the last day we can accept donations. Mr. Nick Klingler and several students will deliver the toys shortly thereafter.

Many of you will be shopping over the Thanksgiving holiday and this is the perfect time to pick up your gift for the Christmas Store. Please support the Brebeuf community as we give hope to families in need, and make their holiday season a little brighter!

Please contact Nick Klingler at nklingler@brebeuf.org if you would like to help sort the toys in the Chapel on Tuesday, November 28.

Mothers Association Interfaith Prayer Group Meeting

The Mothers Association Interfaith Prayer Group welcomes you to our Tuesday, December 5 meeting.
December 5
8:30-10:00 a.m.

The topic for this meeting will be "December Traditions."
During this meeting we will share food, stories and traditions within our families and faith that take place during the holidays. Please bring your favorite dish... whatever you associate with holidays. It can be any holiday and any food. We look forward to seeing all of you there!
Please note the date change due to the holidays!
What is the Interfaith Prayer Group? We strive to create an inviting place to explore similarities vs differences across faiths; to facilitate discussions of varying faith traditions; to foster an understanding and appreciation of our different faiths through education, sharing and fellowship; and to explore different dimensions of our own faiths, in a safe and sacred place.
Most Interfaith Prayer Group meetings are held the last Tuesday of the month from 8:30-9:30 a.m. We request that you arrive just a few minutes early so we can get started on time.
