In this edition of Professional Advisor Chats, I sat down with Ed McGill and Trent Burley, of McGill Junge Wealth Management, to discuss how and why to engage clients in charitable conversations. According to the 2023 U.S. Trust® Study of High-Net-Worth Philanthropy, 85% of affluent households gave to charity in 2022. Charitable giving offers both emotional and rational upsides to your clients. Advisors who lean into these benefits stand a strong chance of being viewed by their clients as effective, impactful and able to deliver well-rounded services to improve clients’ lives and give them peace of mind.  

Here are three common ways to approach conversations about charitable giving:

You can prepare for your meeting with a variety of resources about the Community Foundation and learn how charitable giving may be a fit for your clients' financial plans. 

You don’t have to be an expert on every charitable giving technique or local charitable entity and cause to succeed. Learn how we can partner with you to help your clients achieve their goals. 

As you continue to meet with current and prospective clients throughout the year, the topic of charitable planning will likely be on the agenda. This Giving Guide helps your clients strategically consider their charitable giving now and into the future. These self-guided exercises are designed to help your clients determine how best to maximize the impact of their giving and equip them with questions as they engage with charitable organizations.  

The Capital Crossroads Annual Report can be a great item to share with your charitably inclined clients, as a way for them to stay up-to-date on efforts that inspire focus on a few select goals that are critical to our region’s future success and for you to use as a value-add to foster relationship building. 

For over 20 years, the Endow Iowa Tax Credit program has been a valuable tool to maximize your clients' support of Iowa causes they care about. Endow Iowa qualified gifts made in 2024 that did not receive credits were issued a 2025 Endow Iowa Tax Credit application in January to receive 2025 credits.  

Endow Iowa Tax Credits are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to the annual appropriation limit. If your clients have received an application and wish to receive tax credits, please have them return their application as soon as possible. Applications submitted more than 12 months after the date of donation will be denied credits. Learn more about Endow Iowa Tax Credit and contact us with questions.

With record levels of food insecurity throughout Greater Des Moines, combined with economic factors and rising costs, our community came together to launch the Central Iowa Food Security Plan last year and the work continues.
